Parents should always encourage their college student to excel academically. However, equally important is encouraging them to learn skills that will form the foundation for a rich professional and personal life. Those include campus participation, career planning, building bonds with their campus, and finding quality friendships and meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime.

David Porter, a consultant to colleges and universities throughout North America, says, “Students who are socially connected to their campus have better GPAs, are personally and academically more responsible, and have a better chance of graduating.”

Mr. Porter shares four questions every parent should ask their college student while they’re home for the holidays:

1. Do they participate in the campus activities? How doing so can help to forge a healthy bond with their campus that will ensure a strong academic performance and responsible behavior.

2. Do they spend time at the campus social spaces? How they are crucial to a strong social and cultural campus experience, especially for younger students.

3. Are they using campus clubs and organizations to meet people of similar values, interests and career goals? How doing so helps them build meaningful relationships today that can also advance their future careers.

4. Are they happy outside of class? How the new generation of campus social spaces help teach students the social and emotional skills necessary to excel in a future career.
