Whether you are returning to school or starting again after several years away, preparation is important for a successful school year. Pursuing an advanced degree, such as a masters in leadership, is very different from the day you started first grade, but some of the ways you can prepare are similar. Here are five ways to get ready for the next school year.

1.    Review any study guides, course notes or information that will help you in your courses. You may be seeking a master’s degree in business intelligence or working toward an advanced degree in secondary education. To be considered for the programs, you must have a background that fits the degree. Explore the courses in your background to prepare for the advanced coursework.

2.    Look ahead. Take a look at the course synopsis. If there are book or study materials that go with the course, review them before the course begins. This way you will have a good feel as to what to expect when the first day of class begins.

3.    Create a schedule. You may be taking an on-campus course and you may know what time the participants meet. But you still need to schedule time for studying and any special project that could be a part of the course. This can be challenging if you are working and/or raising a family while you go to school. Don’t forget to schedule some “me time” as a reward for your hard work. For those taking an online or independent study course, you have to be self-disciplined and set times for your course work. You don’t want to procrastinate and end up having to do the entire course in just a few days. Schedule time weekly to work on your course materials.

4.    Purchase your study materials and or books early. Also, while buying school supplies is not as challenging as it may have been when you were in elementary school and had to buy glue, scissors or construction paper, you will need some basic items to get you through. Invest in notebooks and pens and keep a supply for when you need them.

5.    Finally, take care of yourself. Eat right, exercise and get a proper amount of sleep in the weeks leading up to the school year. Put yourself on a sleep schedule that works with your course schedule. If you have an 8 a.m. class time and you are not used to getting up early, train your body to get up in time for class and have a healthy breakfast. Taking care of yourself helps to keep your mind sharp and focused.

Pursuing an education is rewarding but also challenging. If you take the time to prepare for the school year, you will be successful.
