Executives Have To Eat Too – Resources For Executive Job Search

Dream more than others think practical…Expect more than others think possible.” – Howard Schultz

Career AlleyThe infamous food chain (not to be confused with a food web!).

This is where corporate life mimics the animal world, although in the corporate world the food chain is shaped like a pyramid, with lots of junior employees at the base and fewer senior people as you move up the pyramid.

With that picture in mind, the more senior your role, the more difficult it is to find a new job. So, how long does it take to find a more senior job?

The answer is similar to the question “how long is a piece of string?” – it depends.

There are so many factors (salary, education, experience, geographic location, your network, industry, the economy, etc.) that drive the job search process. But don’t think of these factors as negative, think of them as positive and base your approach on how you will overcome or leverage your job search factors.

So, if there are fewer senior jobs it stands to reason that there are fewer resources available to executives. But that is not always the case. Today’s post focuses on job search resources for executives.

Executive Recruiters – Like everything else in life, recruiters (executive or otherwise) come in all shapes and sizes. There is a “gray area” in terms of where Executive Recruiters begin and other Recruiters end. There is a great deal of overlap on the fringe, but the high end of recruiting is fairly well defined. Many Executive Recruiters are on retainer for specific positions. The list of executive recruiters that follows is by no means the definitive list, it is simply my short list.

  • Korn/Ferry – A global executive recruiter. They have numerous offices across the US and have offices in quite a few international locations as well. You can register with their site, search their site for current opportunities (and apply) or contact a consultant.

  • Russell Reynolds Associates – Russell Reynolds is also a global executive recruiter. Unlike Korn/Ferry, you can not search their site directly for current opportunities, but you can find a consultant and send your resume.

  • Spencer Stuart – Another global executive recruiter. Similar to Korn/Ferry, you can register on the site as well as send your resume. There does not seem to be an option to search for current opportunities.

Executive Job Search Resources – Yes, Executives have to eat too and they also need to tap into job search resources. Several great job search resources are listed below.

  • The Executive Job Search – The Riley Guide, one of the best job search resources on the Internet (if not the best), provides this link which is a full page of resources dedicated to Executive job search and resources, job lead sources, interim executive sources and so much more. It is definitely worth spending some time on this page.

  • BlueSteps – This organization is associated with the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC). They provide access to thousands of executive recruiters around the world and provide a number of benefits for those that join their premium services.

Good luck in your search.
