For those that are looking to get a job in the service, retail or even the restaurant industry, you’re going to find that most companies out there are going to either require that you fill out the application on the computer, or they are going to require that you fill out an application on a piece of paper.

Now, if you’re going to go the old fashioned way and fill out the job application on a piece of paper, there are some things that you’re going to want to know about before you fill it out.  By avoiding these mistakes, you’re going to find that you will be able to potentially put yourself above the rest that do!

Mistake #1 Spelling Mistakes

Always make sure that you have someone else read your application.  You’re going to find that if you have your parents, or a friend look it over, they may find a mistake that you made.  How embarrassing would it be if you handed it in with mistakes?

Mistake #2 Get another application

When you ask for an application, ask for two, or even three.  The reason that you’re going to want to more than one application is so that you can use the first one as a draft.  There’s a good chance that you’re going to screw up with the first application, so it doesn’t hurt to have a back up!

Mistake #3 Blank spaces

If there’s a spot on the application that you can’t fill out, don’t leave it blank.  When you don’t fill it out, you’re going to find that the employer is going to think that you forgot about it or maybe even skipped it.  Instead, you’re going to want to leave something such as, “N/A.”  This will show that you didn’t ignore the issue.

Mistake #4 Not handing to a manager

Once you have filled out the application, you’re going to find that it is now time to hand it into a retail manager.  You’re going to want to make sure that you ask for a manager.  If you hand it to a person rather than a manager, that worker could potentially lose the application.  This is something that you don’t want to happen.

Mistake #5 Be honest

The last thing that I can recommend is to be honest!  You don’t want to lie about your job history, references or even your criminal background.  Most companies are going to do checks and if you don’t tell the truth, they are going to find out sooner or later and trust me, it will come back to bite you in the butt!
