What it is like to attend Loyola University – Chicago

Loyola University – Chicago is the U.S.’s largest Jesuit Catholic university located in Chicago, Illinois. It consists of four campuses: Lake Shore, Water Tower, Medical Center, and the John Felice Rome Center, which is in Rome, Italy. Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, the university’s main residential campus, is located in one of the most economically and culturally diverse neighborhoods in Chicago and in the nation, and is home to more than 40 buildings, including the 5,200 seat, 45,000 square foot Joseph J. Gentile Center for athletics, recreation, and special events. The university’s total enrollment is more than 15,500 students, representing all 50 states and 82 foreign countries; nearly 35% of undergraduates come from outside of Illinois.


The Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at Loyola University – Chicago, Leticia Nieto, says, on average, students have GPAs of 3.6, and ACT scores of about 26 or SAT scores of 1,170 (currently doesn’t include the writing portion as a requirement). Overall, Loyola University – Chicago is looking for students that have consistency in their grades, which are examined more heavily than standardized tests. About 96% of full-time undergraduates receive financial assistance from scholarships, grants, or loans. LUC offers 71 majors, 71 minors, 85 master’s degrees, 31 doctoral degrees, and 26 graduate level certificates; in addition, there are three bachelor’s degree programs for adults, offered by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and honors programs for academically superior students. Some of the most popular majors at LUC where students want to find entry level jobs are psychology, biology, nursing, and chemistry. In addition, an elite law school, a world class medical school, and a nationally ranked MBA program is available. There are over 700 full-time faculty members employed at the university, with 98% of them holding the highest degrees in their fields and 439 being tenured.
Loyola University – Chicago’s athletic teams compete in 15 NCAA division one sports in the Horizon League Conference; the school remains the only university in Illinois to have won an NCAA division one men’s basketball national championship. There are five traditional residence halls, 13 apartment style residences, and special living/learning communities available to students. In addition, more than 175 student activities and organizations from sports to politics to philanthropy are offered.
