Self-Motivation Isn’t Only a Problem for Telecommuters

Staying motivated during the day is one of the biggest challenges for some telecommuters. So corporate trainer and public speaker, Steve Chandler, has come up with 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself (Revised Edition), for anyone who struggles with self-motivation.
One method (number two on the list), “staying hungry,” comes from “The Governator” himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who once told Chandler that he would achieve success as an actor using the same method he used to achieve success as a bodybuilder: “What you do is create a vision of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true,” Schwarzenegger said.

Some other advice Chandler offers is to simplify life by combining tasks whenever possible, such as when he had his children do the grocery shopping (something they enjoyed) while he sat at a table in the grocery store deli and read his daughter’s book reports. By combining, he managed to spend more time with his children, as they gave him regular status reports on their shopping, he read his daughter’s book reports and he got the grocery shopping done.
The same method can be employed in the workplace, but it shouldn’t be confused with multitasking, which requires someone to focus on more than one task simultaneously – something that research has proven is impossible. Combining is more like an employee taking a completed report to the boss’ office while making photocopies of documents because the copier that’s needed is close by. The time it takes for the copies to be made could be used to discuss the report with the boss, which allows the employee to focus on what’s more important … the discussion with the boss about the completed report.
“The more you can focus your life, the more motivated it gets,” says Chandler.
Making daily to-do lists can also help someone stay focused and motivated because he has given himself specific tasks to complete. As each task is completed, he can put a check beside it or draw a line through it, which leads to a sense of accomplishment. When someone feels that she’s “getting things done,” it actually motivates her to want to do more things, which leads to increased productivity … and consequently, self-esteem.
Although this article is primarily targeted at telecommuters, Chandler’s advice can work for anybody who struggles to overcome lack of motivation on the job every day.
