Most Job Seekers Willing to Accept a Job Offer Even if the Pay-Per-Hour is Less Than at Their Previous Job (September 4, 2003 Press Release)

Minneapolis, Minnesota, September 4, 2003 – A majority of college and university students and recent graduates who are actively seeking work are willing to accept a job offer even if the pay-per-hour for the new job is less than at their previous job, according to the results of a poll released today by CollegeRecruiter.com, an online job listing service for students and recent graduates with zero to three years of experience.

“Unfortunately, the results were not surprising to our staff,” said Steven Rothberg, President and Founder of CollegeRecruiter.com. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a real decrease in the number of employers actively recruiting students and recent graduates, whether that recruiting is on-campus, through newspaper or magazine advertising, or posting jobs on-line at career sites. As a result, students and recent graduates recognize that their bargaining power has been reduced, so there is a good chance that their pay will be also.”

Rothberg, however, is optimistic. “Now that the worst of the Iraqi war is behind us, most of the employers with which we’ve talked are making plans to resume their hiring of students and recent graduates. Although we don’t anticipate that fall recruiting will be as strong as it was in 1999 or even 2000, it should easily exceed the results that we saw post-9/11 in 2001 and then again in 2002.”

The CollegeRecruiter.com poll of more than 1,000 college students and recent graduates found that:

• 49 percent won’t accept a pay cut;
• 21 percent would accept a pay cut of between one and nine percent;
• 18 percent would accept a pay cut of between 10 and 24 percent;
• Six percent would accept a pay cut of between 25 and 49 percent; and
• Six percent would accept a pay cut of 50 percent or more.
