Why Is Monster.com Spamming Me About Career Fairs?

It is no secrets that career fairs have seen better days. With more and more employers directing candidates to apply on-line, more and more candidates are avoiding the hassles and stress of attending in-person job fairs because they're largely unproductive. You wait forever to get in and speak with a recruiter but get only a few minutes and perhaps just seconds of their time. They listen, nod, and tell you to apply at their web site. So why even bother going?

Perhaps the failures of this sourcing tool explain why Monster.com and its partner National Career Fairs seem to have greatly pumped up their volume of unsolicited, bulk, commercial emails. I've gone from rarely receiving emails about career fairs just weeks ago to multiple emails a day. Have a look at my spam folder for today.

One email every once in a while I get. But 16 in a day and still seven hours to go before this day is officially over? Ridiculous.

Is it just me or are these guys spamming the heck out of everyone who moves? I don't have a resume on Monster.com and have never opted in for their mailings. Same with National Career Fairs. I pity those who actually did give permission to these organizations. If I'm getting 16 without having provided my opt-in, I can't even imagine how many emails must be going to those who did provide their opt-in.

The same is happening to me. It appears as though they're scraping websites to get email addresses -- I placed an ad on backpage.com on the 3rd of this month with a clickable email address to serve up an autoresponse message, and this email is already on the 'National Career Fairs' list -- I just received a message to it on the 12th.

I received an email from the people who manage their services (I assume mail server) about a spamcop report I filed earlier this month -- telling me that they believe National Career Fairs / Monster.com use opt-in email & have unsubscribe functionality in all the emails. They wanted to get the IP address off from a blacklist.

The thing is - they do not honor their unsubscribe option.

I unsubscribed with one of my emails that received these messages on the 7th & on the 12th I received 2 messages to the unsubscribed email address. Their form stated I would be removed within 2 days.

I tallied things up this morning -- I received 9 emails to 8 different email addresses from National Career Fairs / Monster.com.

If you get them, report them to Spamcop. For good measure, I sent them to spam@uce.gov as well just because the management company kind of irked me with their message, and I humored them for a few days only to verify that I was right.

This is a long post, but I just (just) finished sending off an email to the service manager who contacted me & I'm quite irritated...
