College Recruiting Is Diversity Recruiting

Not enough people know this, but the U.S. college population is more diverse than the U.S. population. I'm not going to get into the reasons, but I do want to discuss the effects on recruiting. If your organization is considering creating or enhancing its college hiring program, then an excellent side effect will be that it will also inevitably improve its diversity hiring record.

Want some numbers? I knew you would. A client asked earlier today for a breakdown of our targeted email, postal mail, and cell phone text messaging (SMS) database. As indicated on our Pricing Information page, we have 120 million candidates in that database, of which 8.5 million are college students or recent graduates. Now here's where it gets interesting. Because we felt that the client's question was one that many of our clients would want to know, we updated our Demographics Page to include these numbers:

Gender

  • Male - 55 percent (66 million) of the 120 million candidates and 51 percent (4.3 million) of the 8.5 million students and recent graduates.
  • Female - 45 percent (54 million) of the 120 million candidates and 49 percent (4.2 million) of the 8.5 million students and recent graduates.

Race

  • Hispanic- 20 percent (24 million) of the 120 million candidates and 14 percent (2 million) of the 8..5 million students and recent graduates.
  • African-American - 12 percent (29 million) of the 120 million candidates and 9 percent (765,000) of the 8.5 million students and recent graduates.
  • Asian-American - 2 percent (2 million) of the 120 million candidates and 2 percent (170,000) of the 8.5 million students and recent graduates.

Want to have some real fun? Have us run counts for combinations such as the number of African-American male engineering juniors and seniors students in California, Oregon, and Washington who have GPA's of 3.0 or higher. Well, I find that type of stuff fun. Even if you don't find it fun, then perhaps you'll find it helpful the next time you're looking to improve your diversity hiring numbers, college hiring numbers, or both.
