A solid cover letter has many good characteristics, including being clear, focused, informative, and friendly. But all of these traits fade from the hiring manager's mind if the letter does not motivate him or her to schedule you for an interview. Therefore, keep that essential point front and center as you create your winning cover letter. Remember, hundreds of other job hunters are seeking the same position you are so it's important that you stand out from the crowd. Here's how:

Cover letters, like cakes, come in different flavors. Some are as predictable as plain vanilla. Others catch the hiring manager by surprise--like fresh strawberries under a layer of fudge frosting.

If you'd like to surprise the employer ready to fill the job you want, learn to write a cover letter that brings a smile and a nod of recognition that you're the one he or she has been waiting for.

Here's a no-fail recipe that will give your cover letter the edge.

Express yourself in a clear and friendly manner, using words that draw in the reader and compel him or her to read from top to bottom without a pause.

Write as though you were sitting together over a cup of coffee.

1. Greet the hiring manager by name whenever possible (not Dear Sir or Madam).

2. Create an attention-getting headline, such as:

Available Immediately: A Sales Manager Who Manages--And Cares

3. Write one or two sentences about your work experience. Pick something unique. "I expanded my sales territory by 30% without leaving my office." He or she can read more in your resume.

4. Request an interview, providing a selection of available dates and times.

5. Include your contact information--especially your cell phone number so you can be reached around the clock. Make sure your voice mail message is professional.

6. Thank the hiring manager for reading your letter, making it clear that you understand he has many to choose from.

7. Sign your name and then add a P.S. in a positive tone. Example: "Looking forward to shaking your hand in person."

A well-written cover letter that commands attention may bring you a quick reply--offering you an interview and perhaps the job itself.

I love my local bookstore. Walking down each aisle, I look at one book after another, usually only stopping to review those books that catch my eye, either because of the title or because of the cover picture or a graphic that piques my interest.

While there are certain books I seek out, because of my own interests based on subject matter important to me, all the books I walk past have the potential to wind up in my library.

There is no such thing as a quick trip to the bookstore for me.

Once a book calls to me from the shelf to the extent that I stop to look closer, it has only one chance at securing its place on one of my bookshelves. And that one chance is determined by how I feel about it after reading the synopsis on the cover.

This may seem a little short-sighted to some of you. And admittedly, I have probably put back many a good book based on this method, but I gave those books the same opportunity as the ones I did take home. It's not my fault they didn't pull me in. I wanted to like them or I never would have picked them up in the first place. They simply did not give me enough information, or the right kind of information to deserve the time commitment I must make to complete the entire tome.

So it is with the cover letter, or the 'un-cover' letter, more aptly.

A busy manager looking to fill a post in his organization will have to sift through many resumes in his search for the right candidate. So that cover letter better stop him in his tracks or there is a good chance the resume will remain on the shelf, eventually finding its way to the bargain bin, and ultimately to the trash bin. Every job seeker wants to land an interview that leads to a job.

A unique cover letter can make that happen.

Here's how:

Let the hiring manager know what you can do. Toot your horn a bit--without blowing him or her away! Run-of-the-mill cover letters waste a lot of space with meaningless phrases meant to impress the hiring manager. Example: I am enclosing, forthwith, a resume of my professional experience that lays out in detail the positions I've held with various companies, etc., etc. The result? Such letters land in the waste basket.

But you can move to the front of the line by getting right to the point--showing what you can do for the employer now. After the usual greeting and opening paragraph of your cover letter, where you introduce yourself to the hiring manager, grab his or her attention with a paragraph like this: (Change details to fit your specialty and target market.)

Today's hiring managers are being bombarded with job applications, resumes, and cover letters. Some have a mile-high pile of paper on their desks and not nearly enough time to read and respond to it. So what is a dedicated job seeker to do in this tight economy when employers are overworked and overwhelmed?

Make your cover letter stand out from the rest. No, not with pink or blue paper or accompanied with a dozen chocolate chip cookies. But simply by writing a one-page cover letter that features these seven wonders:

1. Three paragraphs on a single page: introduction, your skills and qualifications, and a request for an interview.

2. Three or four well-written sentences in each paragraph. Easy on the eyes.

3. Plenty of 'white space' around your writing so the cover letter is easy to read and comprehend. Create generous margins and double space between paragraphs.

Want to draw attention to your cover letter?
So much so that the hiring manager can't put it down?

Here 's the secret. Meet the employer's needs. Show him or her how you, the job seeker, can benefit his or her company--if you're hired to fill the open position.

For example:

I found out through my friend, Rob Johnson, your company CPA, that you are interested in hiring someone to expand your sales territory in the northwest by garnering new customers prior to the release of your new math textbook for junior high school students, Mathematics for the 21st Century. I'd love to take on this challenge, as I have a master's degree in Mathematics as well as experience in sales. I opened ten new accounts in less than six months while employed by Babcock and Taylor Text-book Company in Florida.

Jobacle recently caught up with Louise Kursmark, co-author of the recently released book 15-Minute Cover Letter, Second Edition. She offers effective strategies for scoring face-to-face interviews and answers several of our questions.

Jobacle: If you had to assign a % to the importance of a good cover letter, what would it be?

Louise Kursmark: It's hard to be absolute, because some recruiters and employers love, read, save, and share cover letters while others completely ignore them. Consider your cover letter an added opportunity to convince your audience that you have what they are looking for. It would be foolish to pass up the chance to capture favorable attention.

J: Is there a recommended number of words one should use in a cover letter?

LK: The fewest possible to get the message across! Rather than a word count, use these guidelines to construct your letter:

Opening: Get to the point - tell them why you're writing - in an interesting way if possible. (But it's more important to be clear than clever.)

Middle: Tell them the value you offer. It's not about you - it's what you can do for them. Give a couple of brief highlights of your most notable accomplishments as relevant to the position, company, industry, and any specific challenges you know they are facing. Do NOT tell them your entire career history or all of your qualifications, and don't repeat items word-for-word from your resume.

Closing: Ask for a meeting. Tell them you'll follow up ...and do so!

J: Is it ever OK to send a cover letter that is not targeted to an individual? What if you've exhausted every avenue and have come up empty but still want to contact the organization?

LK: Of course it's OK, although it's less desirable because you don't have an avenue for follow-up. Some companies make it extremely difficult to find out just who your letter should go to. But I consider a blind cover letter a last resort. First be sure you are using the telephone, tapping into your network, and consulting resource materials to find the name of a hiring authority for your area of the business.

J: Should a cover letter match the look and feel of your resume?

LK: Absolutely, in their printed format. However, many cover letters these days are sent by email. I recommend placing your cover letter in the body of the email and attaching your resume as a Word document. You won't have the same look-and-feel with this method, but it's what employers prefer. But do be sure that the language, style, and messages are congruent.

J: What's one piece of advice that you've uncovered after the book went to press that you'd like to add as an addendum?

LK: It's more important than ever to get your messages across QUICKLY. We've learned from Twitter that you can say a lot in 140 characters! Trim your letters down to the core message to be sure they are read and not passed over.

More advice from Louise...

Have you ever heard or read a quotation you just had to share with someone? How about one of these?

"Plan your work for today and every day, then work your plan." Norman Vincent Peale

"Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love." David McCullough

"Success depends on your backbone, not your wishbone." Unknown Author

Each one provides good advice as well as inspiration. Consider including an appropriate quotation in your cover letter. It will pack a punch, give the hiring manager something fresh and motivating to read, and elevate you in his or her mind. Cover letters that offer more than simply a list of job skills, will rise to the top of the pile. Managers will notice such a person and want to call you in for an interview.

How to weave a great quotation into your letter.

Writing a cover letter is a commonplace aspect of conducting any job search. When you apply for a job, even if the prospective employer does not ask you for one, it's good to send one as a way to give them a little more insight into who you are and what you're capable of.

But despite the fact that people write them everyday, many still are unclear about the more important aspects to keep in mind. So to help you out, let's look more specifically at what counts in a cover letter.

Good Use of Grammar

There's not much that stands out more in a cover letter than how it has been written. Yet, you'd be amazed by the number of individuals who send theirs out without having edited it - big mistake.

Remember, when sending a cover letter, writing is the only way to get your point across. This means this mode of communication needs to be perfect. Improper grammar usage or misspelled words can say a lot about how efficient an employee you are likely to be - at least in their eyes. So unfortunately, you may be an excellent employee who won't even be required to rely on written communication when working, but because of your cover letter being poorly written, you may not be called in for an interview.

Avoiding Fluff, Cliches, and Generalities

It's a well-known fact that prospective employers don't have much time on their hands when reviewing cover letters. So it can be irritating when they're trying to read through yours to get a good sense of your skills as well as desire to work for them, and all they get in return is " ... and like my grandmother always says, you can't make anything of yourself unless you be yourself ..."

In other words, while it's nice to know that you listen to your grandmother's words of wisdom, it really doesn't have a place in your cover letter. And neither does showing how many big words you know or being too vague about why you're applying for the job. Your best bet when writing about yourself is to be specific about what skills you bring to the table (mention an example or two if possible). This way the employer doesn't have to dig through a bunch of fluff just to figure out why they should hire you.

Being Honest and Clear in Your Intentions

One aspect of writing that any prospective employer can respect is being honest and clear about the contributions you hope to make at their company. This means there is no room for template answers. Your cover letter should be tailored to their company, and honestly speak as to why you're applying and how you want to make a difference. Of course, doing so will require research on your part. But if you really want to be considered for the position then this is a step you should not overlook.

Writing your cover letter can be easy if you keep in mind what really counts. So dive in and write yours with care. Making a real effort to speak directly, clearly and honestly to a prospective employer will work wonders in getting you the call back you're hoping for.

The holiday decorations are down. The carolers have put away their songbooks. A new calendar page awaits your comments and appointments and to-do list. It's also time to say thank you to everyone who sent you a gift or a card or a cheery e-mail.

It's also an ideal time to spread your appreciation to your business pursuits and contacts. As you write your cover letter to prospective employers, be sure to tuck in a few words of gratitude for the opportunity to introduce yourself and your skills, even as you ask for an interview for the job you want.

Most job seekers understand the value and importance of a well-organized resume but spend far less energy on crafting a strong cover letter. What they fail to realize is that resumes and cover letters go hand-in-hand.

Employers are very busy and receive hundreds of resumes leaving little time for individual review. Submitting a thoughtful and well-written cover letter can help you outshine your competition and get you one step closer to an interview. Don't let the energy you've spent on developing the perfect resume go to waste by failing to deliver an effective cover letter.

Here we offer some tips to help you craft the perfect cover letter that will get you noticed:

1. Understand what the Cover Letter Must Achieve

A cover letter is basically a sales letter. You are trying to motivate a specific action - an invitation for an interview. In addition to reinforcing the key skills and experience you reference in your resume, a cover letter provides you with the opportunity to:

  • demonstrate your desire to work for the employer
  • identify specific ways your expertise can benefit the organization
  • differentiate yourself from other job seekers
  • demonstrate your individual personality
  • explain anomalies that may stand out in a resume such as gaps in employment
  • arouse interest that will help you get that interview.

Think of your cover letter as a knock on the door. When someone opens the door you're standing there ready to introduce yourself and to share your qualifications for the job opening. This is a proactive, direct way to win attention, but also the smart way. Hiring managers are busy. If you want to get noticed you must be clear and direct, positive and professional.

Here's a unique cover letter tip for this tough job market: Tie your cover letter to your resume by mentioning a particular skill or accomplishment the hiring manager can relate to for his company. For example, suppose you are applying for a job as a regional manager of a retail shoe company. You've had excellent experience training sales people and retaining them. Turnover is low and morale is high under your leadership, thus affecting the bottom line in a positive, profitable way.

You could bring this information to the attention of the
hiring manager in this clever and effective way:

I would welcome meeting with you to discuss your need for a regional manager in the area where my family and I will be moving on September 1. I've been a shoe store manager for three years and during my time with The Right Fit shoe store I have trained five new salespeople who have remained with me the entire time. One salesman, Mike Johnson, was so enthusiastic about his job he gave me permission to quote him. "I can't imagine a more pleasant place to work. I like the people here, especially Mark Smith, the manager, and I can earn a good living." Now Mike Johnson is ready to assume my position when I leave!

As you can see from this paragraph, the job hunter, Mark Smith, is making clear to the hiring manager, his own qualifications, as well as the benefit to the company he hopes to work for by using a testimonial from an employee he has worked with at his previous job. If you were the hiring manager wouldn't you want to interview this individual? I certainly would. He not only sounds like a nice guy--but one who knows how to train and retain sales people which increases staff morale and revenue for the company.

A well-written cover letter tied to the accompanying resume in this fashion is certain to win an interview for the writer. Try it for yourself and then get ready to answer the phone.

I just finished reading "The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Resume" (Fourth Edition), by Susan Ireland. It's an excellent book for job seekers and college students trying to land the best internships. Ireland describes and offers samples of four different types of resumes:

  • Chronological
  • Functional
  • Chronological hybrid
  • Functional hybrid

Although I've always used nothing but a chronological resume, I discovered that a functional resume would serve me better. I also learned that in the United States, a resume and a CV (curriculum vitae) aren't the same thing. Resumes are for ordinary job seekers, but CVs are for people in education, medicine or technical fields.

Besides being packed with resume writing tips and dozens of sample resumes, Ireland also gives detailed instructions for making a resume email and scanner friendly. Of course, cover letters are included. What surprised me was that she also offered instructions for how to write a thank you letter. Again, samples were provided. Ireland's samples are typed, but some career counselors recommend handwritten notes, giving the thank you note more of a personal touch.

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Resume" is a must for any college student looking for an internship or a recent college graduate looking for an entry-level job. I'm glad to have this book in my collection of professional reference material. It's simple, to the point and easy to navigate if there's a particular section or sample that's needed.

If you are a college student, you may not yet be accustomed to writing resumes and cover letters. However, the time will soon come where you'll need to learn in order to secure an on- or off-campus job, internship, or job after graduating.

You'll be happy to know that the process is not difficult. It's just a matter of gathering your experiences and organizing them effectively. So to give you a jump start on the writing process, let's look at some ways you can utilize your current skills and talents to create great cover letters and resumes for the jobs you want.

Think of the Purpose of Your Resume

Though you may feel like a novice resume writer, if you set your sites on the purpose behind creating your resume, you'll find that even your first one can be very successful. So what is the purpose? To engage the hiring manager by displaying the many ways you are qualified for the position you want.

Of course, if you are new to the workforce, you may not have a great deal of experience to list on your resume. However, you can list other information, like volunteering efforts or community service projects, technical or computer skills, coursework and GPA (if over 3.0), skills acquired through internships and summer jobs, awards, and any positive personal characteristics that show the employer you are a good fit for their company. Highlighting this information showcases your strengths, and offers insight into your potential as a great employee.

Research, Research, Research before Writing Your Cover Letter

The most important thing you can do when writing your cover is research the job and company you're applying with. This way, you can not only get the inside track on what the company is looking for in an intern or employee, but also tailor your skills and experience to match the position you want.

For instance, let's say you are applying for an internship with a design company because you are pursuing a degree in fashion. First, you'll want to research the company's mission to learn their organizational culture. Then you'll want to make sure the skills you have match that culture, as well as the job you want. If you've tailored outfits for your friends or sewed costumes for your church's play, tell them about it. You can use your experiences to date, alongside an explanation of your passion for the field, to illustrate a great picture of why you're qualified for the position.

Consider the Layout Design

Because you may not have a lot of information to include on your resume, it is that much more important that you consider the layout design. If you don't want yours looking like everyone else's, you may want to avoid MS Word templates. You can look for really creative designs at your career center or on the Internet to help you organize your information. That way, your resume will not only be informative, but eye-catching as well.

While you may not have a lot of work experience, you still have plenty to offer. So gather everything that you've accomplished in your high school and college years for your resume and cover letter. You'll be surprised to find that you're a much stronger candidate than you could have ever imagined.

Here is a little secret ingredient you'll want to add to your cover letter to make it absolutely irresistible to hiring managers and personnel professionals. Like sugar or cinnamon to a cookie recipe, no cover letter will be as appetizing without this bit of spice.

And what is it?

The small but mighty P.S. (postscript).

Add a P.S. to the end of your job-search cover letter and it will yield amazing results.

Most people think a P.S. is an 'after thought'--something to add when you forgot to include it in the letter itself. Example: P.S. I forgot to mention I bought tickets for the concert. Or, P.S. Please return the ice skates I loaned you.

That is one way to use the P.S., but it's not the only way or even the most effective way. A P.S. on a cover letter attracts like a powerful magnet to metal shavings. Many people will skip the contents of the letter and read the P.S. first! Then they pop back to the top of the letter to find out what the writer has to say.

Maybe you've noticed that advertisers and marketers use the P.S. to encourage the reader to take advantage of a special offer and to take action now.

Example:

P.S. Call TODAY for your free handwriting analysis.

OR

P.S. ORDER NOW. Only two cases left at this incredible price!

YOU can use the P.S. in a similar way in each of your resume cover letters.

Following are TWO examples of how the P.S. can make your cover letter the best ever!

P.S. I will get back to you by phone on August 10. I look forward to meeting and speaking with you in person about (insert job title here). Please call me at 555-555-5555. Thank you ahead of time for your consideration.

P.S. I look forward to meeting you in person to discuss how I can contribute to your company as a (insert job title here). Please feel free to contact me directly at 555-555-5555 to set up an interview at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and the opportunity.

You can also promote your qualities and strengths as a job candidate and restate your contact information once again by using the P.S.

Tips for using the P.S. (postscript):

Place the P.S. at the bottom of your cover letter flush left. Type it in bold text or italics. Do not use both.

P.S. Remember that people cannot resist reading a postscript (P.S.). So add one to your next cover letter and let this powerful little secret work its magic for you!

Being fired from your job can be extremely difficult. You not only have to think about how you will put meals on the table and pay your bills, but also how your pride and belief in yourself as an employee has been affected.

No matter the reason you were let go, it can be more than a notion trying to start over again. But if treated with the right attitude, the application process can be very similar to before you were fired. So to help you get started, let's look at some ways you can pick yourself up and get back in the workforce.

Focus on the Positives When Writing in Your Resume

You may feel obligated to come right out in your resume and tell a prospective employer why you left your former employer. But in all honesty, the resume is not that place. Your goal in the resume is to spell out where you worked and how your active responsibilities and skills made a difference during the time you were there.

In other words, focus on the positives. You can create a section titled "Attributes and Qualifications" to highlight the ways you were able to make a difference in the company. In that section you can very specifically name projects that showcase the highest points in your career. This way, you can help the employer focus on how you will be an asset to their company - not the opposite.

Let Your Cover Letter Tell a Great Story

The last thing you want to do when opening your cover letter is say the words "The reason I'm applying for this position is because I was fired from my previous one." Instead, you want to focus on the strengths in your area of expertise that have encouraged you to apply for the job. In fact, there is no need to mention being fired at all in the cover letter as it will leave tons of questions in the hiring managers' minds about why you were fired instead of focusing on why they want to hire you.

What can you do instead? Treat your cover letter like you would any other. Explain with passion why you really want this position. Let them know how you can enhance the company's mission with your expertise. And sell yourself as a great asset. You will have your chance to explain why you were fired; but dwelling on it in the cover letter is not the best place to do it.

What about References?

If you can avoid using a reference from your previous employer then it would be a good idea to do so. However, if you must reference the employer from which you were fired, you might want to try a manager with whom you had a good relationship, despite how you departed. That way, they can focus on your personality or work ethic (if it was good) and not so much on why you were fired.

Getting fired does not have to be the end of the world. So keep pushing toward your goal of finding employment. You'll see that with the right attitude - and a solid cover letter and resume - you'll land another job in no time.

Cover letters can do more than simply introduce you. They can give an employer a more in-depth view of who you are and what you will bring to the table.

If you are planning to write a story about how to write the ideal cover letter, here are some ideas for you:

Does your cover letter convey who you are and what you want quickly, or does it confuse the reader?

A cover letter is a document that introduces you and your resume to potential employers. It is your opportunity to give employers a good look at yourself, your credentials, and your background. In many cases, it is the first thing an employer sees (because it goes in front of your resume), so expect it to make your opening impression.

Cover letters can do more than simply introduce you. They can give an employer a more in-depth view of who you are and what you will bring to the table.

The ideal cover letter is focused, professional, and well-written. While the employer is reading your cover letter, they are deciding if it makes sense to continue onto your resume. If you cannot make your cover letter great, then the employer has no reason to believe you will do great work for them either.

The format of an ideal cover letter is as follows:

1. I am writing to you today because...

In this section, state why you are writing to the employer. Where did you see the ad for the position, or who recommended you?

2. I like your company because...

In this paragraph, compliment the employer on what they have done right and what you admire about them. Sincere flattery goes a long way and shows that you have taken the time to get to know the employer in more detail.

3. Here are relevant examples of what I have done that match with what you are looking for...

In this paragraph, discuss your accomplishments or highlights that you want to showcase or have the employer locate quickly. Bullets work well in making your accomplishments easy to read.

4. Here's why I am a good candidate...

In this paragraph, describe who you are and what makes you stand out. Include your strengths and what you are passionate about in your career.

5. Here's my contact information...

In this paragraph, tell the employer that you are excited and looking forward to the interview. Make note of your contact information and state what next steps will be. If you will wait for their reply, tell them that. If you will be following up, tell them when they can expect to hear from you. Whatever you put down, make sure you do what you say will you do.

Then, it's up to you...

An ideal cover letter can get you the interview. What you do once you get there is in your hands.

There are cover letters--and there are cover letters. Some are cookie-cutter predictable. And some offer a tasty surprise--like a cherry under chocolate frosting. Which ones would you like to receive if you were a hiring manager?

You know the answer. You'd like the ones with a surprise--letters that show the job seeker has stepped out of his or her comfort zone and is willing to offer something special.

If you'd like to write such a cover letter, here's the most important thing to do:

Express yourself in a clear and friendly manner, using language that will engage the hiring manager, wording that draws a reader in and compels him or her to read all the way through to the end.

In other words, write as though you were sitting together over a cup of coffee or tea.

1. Greet the hiring manager by name if possible (not Dear Sir or Madam).
2. Create a headline that will grab his or her attention, such as:

Sales Executive Ready to Expand Territory

3. Write one or two sentences about your experience. He can read more in your resume.
4. ASK to meet for an interview and offer a selection of dates and times. Be proactive.
5. Provide your contact information clearly--especially your cell phone number.
6. Thank the employer for reading your cover letter.
7. Sign your name and then add a P.S. in a friendly tone. "I'm really looking forward to meeting with you in person."

A well-written cover letter that sets you apart from other job seekers is one that shows you're not afraid to step out of your comfort zone and show the real you!

If you are a Baby Boomer, you are a part of a generation that is headed toward retirement. However, due to our slumping economy, there is a chance that even if you are able to retire, you could be making a u-turn right back into the workforce to supplement your retirement savings.

With competition being so stiff, it may seem that the odds are against you for getting hired, especially having to compete with younger talent. In some cases this is true, but there are also employers out there looking for the skills and expertise mature workers can bring to the table. So if you're a Baby Boomer looking for employment, it is not too late to secure a great job. You just need the right resume and cover letter to get you in the door.

Updating Your Resume

If you've been out of the job market for a decade or more, updating your resume may be more challenging than you remember, especially when you factor in the Internet and possibly having to apply online. But that's not all you have to think about. As a mature worker, you also have the challenge of creating a resume that showcases your years of experience without shining a spotlight on your age.

So how can you get this done? One way is by using a functional resume format that highlights specific skills rather than chronological timelines. When writing your skills, try going into detail regarding projects you've completed that have benefited your previous companies. You can also create a section that focuses on the computer technologies you've mastered or any training you've completed. All of these things can help employers focus more on your skills and talents, and less on your age.

Using Your Cover Letter to Reveal Who You Really Are

Being a mature worker, you may have to contend with a few stereotypes during your job search. Some include you being less productive than your younger counterparts, more resistant to newer technologies, and set in your ways. Of course, none of those descriptions define who you really are. But it is up to you to help prospective employers understand this.

One way to do this is by explaining how important it is for you to expand the landscape of your career. You're not in it for the money, you simply want to grow. If you've recently received any advanced degrees or additional education, don't hesitate to mention it. And most importantly, let employers know you have no intentions of leaving the industry any time soon - you're still getting your feet wet.

Confidence is Key

You may be feeling uncertain about your ability to compete in an already competitive job search. But don't let that deter you. You have years of experience under your belt and the skill level to match. So make sure you maintain your confidence throughout your job search process. It will shine through in your resume, cover letter, and face-to-face interview.

Getting back into the workforce as a Baby Boomer isn't an impossible task if you believe in your capabilities and make a strong effort to excel. The more proactive you are about putting yourself out there, the more success you will have in locating opportunities that can take your career to the next level.

You have recently made the decision to exit one career and enter a new one, which can be both exciting and a little bit scary. But while the choice to make the career switch was probably a grueling one, the prospect of explaining your lack of job experience to potential employers is probably downright terrifying.

Though you may be concerned about drawing attention to this missing portion of your career history, don't spend too much time dwelling on it. The truth is, if you really desire to move into your new career, you can do it. You just have to believe in yourself and present this belief in your cover letters. Let's look at how you can do it ...

Be Honest about Why You're Changing Careers

When you begin explaining why you're switching careers in your cover letter, it is best to be as honest as possible. You can do this by remembering that at some point you sat alone and contemplated your reasons for making this major life decision. So take this time to revisit those reasons. Are you switching because you weren't fulfilled in your previous career? Or do you believe that you've always had talent in this field and now you want to pursue it?

Whatever your reasons may be, express them well. Doing so may help prospective employers better relate to your new-found passion. Even more, it may inspire them to take a chance with you, even if you have less experience in this specific career than other candidates.

Discuss Your Relevant Experience

As mentioned previously, you may not have an extensive background in the career you are pursuing, but that's okay. If you have relevant professional experience, you can simply dig that up to show the prospective employer your ability to perform.

For instance, you may have years of experience working as a PR manager. However, you would like to become a marketing manager because you're interested in branding products, participating in trade shows, and getting the company name out to the public. As a PR manager, you may have experience talking to the media on behalf of your company, and developing strategies to help create the proper public image. So you can note these and other relevant PR experiences in your cover letter to show that your understanding of the company's public image and products can easily be applied to a marketing career.

Do You Believe in Yourself?

You should question how much you believe in yourself before writing your cover letter. Why? Because you are making a major change in your life that requires courage, and could possibly face a little rejection. If you hold fear in your heart, it can easily translate on paper. So before you write your cover letter, it is a good idea to develop and nurture your belief in your capabilities. This can boost your confidence and possibly help the potential employer take a greater interest in you.

Switching careers can definitely be an intimidating prospect to consider. But if you have confidence in your abilities, the skills to back it up, and a great cover letter to boot, you will be well on your way to successfully entering an exciting new career in the field you absolutely love.

The cover letter is one of those things that most hiring managers say they want but others say they can do without and will even ignore if it's provided. Well, image consultant, marketing/management expert, and CEO of MSCO, Mark Stevens wants to see a cover letter ... and not just any cover letter either. Read on and see how to impress not only Stevens, but possibly every employer who picks up a copy of your resume:

Cover letters are great. Cover letters suck.

Resumes are great. Resumes suck.

Why do some fall in the first camp (winners) and others in the second (fodder for the waste basket)?

The losers lack the element of surprise.

You reach to read a resume and you know what you will see 99.9 percent of the time: "Highly ambitious, graduate of xyz U, a wonderful person adored by all."

Next.

I want a cover letter because I want to hear candidates think. To discover that they can find a way to command my attention not with the usual academic honors window dressing but, as I noted, the element of surprise.

Some time ago, I received a cover letter that began:

"I am tired of banging my head against the wall."

That caught my attention. The applicant was referring to a fruitless search for a company with substance. The element of surprise captured my attention, I read on, she appeared to have the right stuff and I hired her.

A resume produced in cookie cutter fashion virtually assures that you won't get called.

When I pitched Smith Barney to get their business I started by tell them that their marketing sucks. Surprise!

But even bigger surprise, we landed the business.

Look like everyone else and it's likely you'll never get the job. Stand out. Take a risk. Break the rules.

That's what recruiters really want to see. It's a measure of the type of employee you'll be.

The more I learn about resume writing, the more I realize that a lot of it is a matter of taste. There are some universal standards that I will discuss in later articles, but there are also some things that most people will say turn them off, but one or two others say are okay. So, I recently sent out a query to get more information on just what turns employers off and what gets their attention when reading resumes.

One of the experts who answered my query is Mark Stevens, an image consultant, marketing/management expert, and CEO of MSCO. Although he isn't as radical as Seth Godin, who recommends doing away with a resume altogether, Stevens does suggest breaking away from the rest of the pack. The following are his thoughts:

Most resumes suck.

Stevens recommends NOT TO follow the rules that everyone else does. Dare to
be different - you'll stand out from the crowd...

Stevens' Resume Advice:

Putting your worst foot forward: The toll of the cookie cutter resume. In
the annual ritual that begins with high school summer jobs then college
graduation - hopefully, with a job in hand, millions of students appear to
do their best to squander a costly education. Why? Because they forgo even
an iota of creativity and send out cookie cutter resumes that camouflage
whatever intelligence, innovation and personality they may have.

The process of applying for a job can be taxing to say the least. But the process of writing a cover letter can be downright exhausting - especially when you're unsure of how to express your interest in that job you're applying for.

The good news is that expressing your interest can be as simple as taking the initiative to do some deep digging. That is, digging for information on how the position fulfills the company's goals, what they are looking for in an employee, and what you're looking for in a job. Of course, getting this done requires research. So to help you get started, here are a few ideas ...

Research the Position

One of your main goals when writing your cover letter will be to convince the prospective employer that you know what they need in their hiring position - and that you're the person to give them just that. To get this done, you'll need to gain some perspective on what the job entails.

A good way to get started is by researching the responsibilities assumed in that position. You can learn specific duties by reviewing the job posting, and even contacting Human Resources, for additional information. Also, you can visit career websites that give details of various job descriptions. Afterward, you can try to determine how your previous experiences will enhance the position. By adding this element to your cover letter, you can "wow" the employer with your expertise and passion for helping their company grow.

Research the Company

Another great way to develop your cover letter is to gather specific details about the company. It isn't a good idea to treat all companies the same, as each has its own culture and mission. This means you'll want to learn more about the company's specific culture and goals by conducting a little research.

What kind of research? Well, for starters you can search their website for information on their business, strategy, products, services, and even employee activities. This will help you better understand the company's profile. And if you need more, you can call Human Resources to request information pieces that can help you gather additional background information. Between these resources, you should have useful information that can help you develop a sense of how your presence will enhance the company's mission and goals.

Research Yourself

After you've researched the position and company it is time to get honest with yourself. Are you applying for the job because you want money or status? Or because you really want to learn, grow, and enhance the company's mission? It's a really good idea to sit down and contemplate these ideas because they will not only help you determine whether you're moving in the right direction career-wise, they will also help you write an honest cover letter.

Writing a cover letter is not as difficult as you think, especially when you take time to conduct research on the position, company and yourself. So take this opportunity to fine-tune your career motivations while at the same time creating a cover letter that just might help you land your ideal job.

Most people's first response is....Huh? That's right, if you stop writing cover letters, you'll get more interviews.

Most people have been taught paper-based resume strategies, that encourage writing a static resume and customizing with a cover letter. But this strategy doesn't work in today's world of digital resumes.

I know it's counterintuitive, and goes against everything you were taught, but it's true. I'll prove it to you with one sentence.

EMPLOYERS DON'T INCLUDE COVER LETTERS IN THEIR SEARCH.

When applying for a new job, it can sometimes be difficult to explain a huge gap in employment, or lack of relevant employment, when all you have is your resume to do the talking. This is why it is recommended that you include a cover letter with your resume.

But what can a cover letter do for you? It can give the prospective employer insight into who you are as a person, as well as why you want to work for their company. And it can also give you the opportunity to turn what may look like weaknesses on your resume into strengths. Let's look at a few ways this can be accomplished.

Focus on Your Special Skills

If you don't have a lot of jobs to list on your resume, but you do have relevant skills that you've acquired over the years, you can use your cover letter to explain what looks to be a lack of experience. A great way to get started is by creating a list of skills you've developed that match the company's job posting, mission and culture. Next you can use the cover letter to explain how those skills can enhance the company.

For example, you may be an expert typist capable of accurately typing 80 WPM, which is perfect for the data entry position you're interested in. The only drawback is that you didn't gain your expertise from your last 20 years as a housewife and part-time babysitter. Instead, you picked it up while volunteering as your church's secretary over the past decade. In this case, you can use your cover letter to highlight this skill and turn around what might be perceived as a lack of job experience.

Hobbies Are Not Off-Limits

Many people have hobbies that they spend a lot of time focusing on and eventually want to turn into careers. For example, you may love to work on computers and have expertise with both hardware and software applications, which has nothing to do with your string of jobs working in factories.

You decide that you are interested in applying for a position with a small start-up company that needs an entry-level IT technician. You know you're perfect for it but don't know how to prove it. That is, until you remember that you keep up with all of the technology, have taken some classes at a local college, and have years of experience fixing computers in your community. By explaining all of this in your cover letter, you have a chance to showcase the experience you've gained.

Keep Your Explanations Simple

While you want to use your cover letter to fill in gaps in your job history, you don't want the employer to spend too much time thinking about the possibility of you being a weak candidate. So instead of spending a lot of time explaining why your skills and hobbies are stellar, it is a good idea to instead keep this part as brief as you would in any other cover letter.

Having gaps in your work history doesn't have to define your capabilities as an employee. So try using your cover letter to highlight your special skills. You might be surprised by the success that follows.

Dear Job Hunter:

Have you ever asked questions like these?

"May I have a chocolate ice cream sundae, please?"
"Are you free for lunch tomorrow?"
"Can you give me a hand moving my desk?"
"Will you loan me a few dollars till payday?"

Life is filled with such mundane questions. In order to get what we need and want we must ask for it--whether it's a snack, a date, an extra hand. Yet, when it comes to including in a cover letter, the all-important request for a job interview, some job-seekers shy away from asking, "May I meet you to discuss the opening for restaurant manager (or whatever the position may be)?" or "May I come to your office for an interview?"

Have you ever sat down at your computer with tons of information to include in both your cover letter and resume but didn't know where to go from there? Many people get stuck at this stage because they're afraid they might use the wrong words to describe their skills and accomplishments.

If you've felt this way, you're not alone. However, there are simple ways you can avoid having your resume and cover letter sound too weak, limited, or vague.

Tell Them What You Did - Not What You Should Have Done

When creating a cover letter or resume, some people get in the habit of using passive words and phrases that sound more like a description of what they should have done on the job rather than what they actually accomplished. For example, the phrases "responsible for" or "duties included" draw a picture of what your previous employer wanted you to do, but don't tell whether you actually accomplished their goal. A good way to turn this problem around for the better is by using action verbs like managed, wrote, collaborated, and demonstrated followed by specific tasks you completed. This will help you provide your prospective employer with a good example of your current skill level.

Empty Words - Proceed with Caution

The following list of words are good to use under some circumstances, but should be used with caution: aggressive, creative, determined, flexible, competent, logical, independent, successful, well-organized, and meticulous. Stating that you are all of these things does not explain how you are any of them, which essentially gives them empty meanings until they are applied to specific actions you've taken. So instead of using them to describe yourself, try using them to describe a campaign you initiated, event you organized, sales strategy you implemented, or team you developed. That way you'll give your prospective employer insight into your true skills and capabilities based on past experiences.

Don't Forget about Keywords

Because so much of the job search process relies on Internet applications or online job databases, it is a good idea to focus on specific keywords that will make your resume and cover letter more searchable on the Internet. So in this case, you will want to veer away from words that have nothing to do with the field you're looking to work in. For example, if you want to work in the fashion industry, there's no need to use a lot of words focused on cars, clocks, cups, telephones, pencils ... you get my drift? You will instead benefit from using keywords like fashion, textile, fabrics, garments, and other words that you imagine employers in your specific industry will be typing in during their online resume search.

Learning the words and phrases you want to avoid on your resume and cover letter will help you to provide more accurate information regarding your career skills. So think in action verbs, avoid empty meanings, and choose industry-specific keywords. Doing this will definitely benefit your job search in the long run.

Dear Job-Hunter:

Everyone enjoys being greeted in a warm, friendly, yet professional manner. So endear yourself to a hiring manager by starting your cover letter with this magical word--DEAR.

Then go a step further. . .

Add the potential employer's name and your cover letter will magically rise to the top of the incoming mail pile.

Example:

Dear Mr. Jones not Dear Hiring Manager
Dear Jane Smith not Dear Personnel Manager
Dear Mrs. Brown not To Whom it May Concern

Dear Mr. Jones is superior to Dear Hiring Manager. But Dear Personnel Manager is clearly better than To whom it may concern--which doesn't really concern anyone.

It may take a bit of time to find out the name of the employer you wish to reach but it will be worth the effort. Do so by calling the company or checking the web site. Then sprinkle this bit of magic on your next cover letter--greet the hiring manager by his or her first name.

When in doubt. . .

If you cannot find the name of the person you're writing to, use the generic greeting, Dear Hiring Manager, and then add this personal message.

PLEASE NOTE: I'm sorry for greeting you in an impersonal way. I was not able to find your name online or by phone. However, when we meet in person, I promise to call you by name and I'm eager for that opportunity.

Such a note would surely inspire him or her to contact you for an interview. This cover letter magic turns a negative into a positive that will set you apart from other job seekers.

Before you write your next cover letter, think about who will want to hear what you have to say. Then find out that person's name and write a clear and confident letter that starts with DEAR.

If you’ve been job hunting for some time now, you probably have come to the realization that it’s a jungle out there. It’s a jungle with lots of job seekers vying for the exact positions that you are seeking. You have the experience, education and achievements that warrant an interview… but you’re not getting any. What’s going on?

Much to your chagrin, and no matter how much you protest, the culprit could be you – not the employer. Well, not you personally but how you’ve represented yourself. Did you throw your cover letter together thoughtlessly, change the company and title and call it a day? I was afraid of that. Each customer has its own requirements. Think of your resume package as a four-course meal.

1) Give them exactly what they want
Being a hiring manager is not an easy job. They have to sift through many resume packages from job seekers who don’t meet the specified requirements and have no skills they need to fill the open position. It’s a frustrating job and it can get them a little on edge.

Knowing that, just give them what they want! Don’t beat around the bush or wait until the interview (that you think is coming) to enlighten them about how perfect you are for the job; now is the time to do it.

2) Prove you’re worth the price
With fancy restaurants, they have to demonstrate that they are actually worth a lot more than the burger joint down the road. When it comes to job seekers, you have to prove your worth to the company. That’s when it pays (possibly literally) to provide achievements with qualifiers. Include dollar amounts, percentages anything that will signify how outstanding that accomplishment was and the impact it had on the company. Because, as we all know, it’s all about the bottom line.

3) Don’t make the employer work
Employers don’t have time to hunt for your qualifications or contact information or even what position you are applying for within their company. Make it easy for them. Point out the qualifications you have that match – or surpass – their expectations. Be specific. Make your contact information obvious but not obtrusive. Include the exact position for which you applying. If you are indeed qualified then by doing all this, you’re making it very difficult not to call you in for an interview.

4) They’re not the same as the employer down the road
Demonstrate your knowledge of the company. Show that you care and actually did your homework. By providing a couple of little references to current (or past) events within the company, you’ll be proving to them your desire to work for them. It’s relatively easy to sneak these in on your cover letter without seeming too obvious. For example, explain how your background and expertise would fit perfectly with the new CEO’s vision.

Remember, when it comes to your resume package, you really do only have one chance to make a good impression. Judgment on whether you’re a good or bad fit for a position happens so quickly that if you don’t have everything exactly how they want it, you’ll be waiting a very long time for that phone call.

Dear Job Seeker:
When you're hungry for a sandwich you step up to the deli counter and ask for it. If you're in the market for a new car, you go to a dealership and ask to see the model you're interested in. And if you spot a book you'd like to buy, you ask the clerk to ring up your purchase. ASKING is the first key to getting what you want. Asking effectively is the second and most important key. Yet many job hunters forget this essential key when it comes to an interview for the job they're eager to fill.

This may seem pretty obvious but some people forget to check the company website for personnel information. If you have the title, many times you can find out their name, phone number and email. Wouldn't that be great? Definitely utilize the Internet for this search.

Also on the company website, check out to see if they have open positions posted. They may have more contact information available on their website than on general job boards where you originally found the job opening.

Check out the Media page for their latest happenings (this will also help you get more familiar with the company as a whole and give you an edge during interviews). See who is quoted in the press releases as they usually give the person's name and title.

Tip #2: Call the Company

There are some sneaky ways you can try to find out the name of the hiring manager in charge of the open position for which you are applying. Pick up the phone and call the company. Ask the receptionist the name of 'X Position' (for example: Marketing Manager for Soft Goods). This can obviously work if you know the title of the hiring manager.

There's also a trick that I used to use when working in the corporate world. You can call and ask the receptionist for the spelling of the person's name in the position you are trying to contact. So you might say something like, "Hi, I am sending the Public Relations Manager a piece of important information and need to confirm the spelling of her/his name. Could you please spell it for me?" While you have them on the phone, you can even try to get their email address so you can follow-up. If there is no phone number listed, you might want to hold off on calling them directly. You don't want to get on their bad side.

In most instances, where there's a will there's a way. That's not to say there won't be situations that, despite your best effort, you absolutely cannot find out the name you so desperately need. That's when you just have to applaud yourself for giving it your best effort...then let it go. And maybe that phone will ring anyway with the mystery hiring manager on the other end wanting to interview you.

SEATTLE, WA -- For many people, taking time away from work is the key to living a balanced life. Be professional and honest with employers, and always concentrate on your strengths as a candidate. If you can do this, your employment gap won't limit your chances at all. Here are some tips for handling interruptions in your career history:

  • Create a resume that highlights your expertise and loyalty over the years. Make it a point to use examples from your past to illustrate your commitment and work ethic.

  • If you took a break from work within the past five years, you may wish to include a brief explanation in your cover letter. Try something like this: "Recently, I returned from a period of extended travel in Europe, Asia and South America. Because of this experience, I will bring an international perspective to your team."

Here is another example: "After 16 years of profit-oriented work experience, I took some time off to be with my family. I am excited to apply my talents to increase revenue for your sales department, and feel strongly that I will be an immediate and lasting asset to your company."

  • When you respond to questions in an interview, focus on the ways that your non work experience will contribute to the company's goals. For instance, do you possess new skills or a unique point of view (from education or travel)? Are you highly driven to return to the work force (after caring for kids or relatives)?

  • If you prefer to keep your reasons to yourself, you may wish to respond to interview questions in a fashion similar to this: "I am grateful that I had the opportunity to take a step out of the workplace, and I am driven to make a real difference for a growth-oriented company." Then, steer the conversation back to your achievements and potential contributions.

I saw one of my favorite (okay, my favorite) country singers — Toby Keith — rock the house in Hershey, PA this summer. He sang one of his crowd-pleasing hits, “I Wanna Talk About Me”:

Wanna talk about I
Wanna talk about number one
Oh my me my
What I think, what I like, what I
know, what I want, what I see
I like talking about you, usually, but occasionally
I wanna talk about me
I wanna talk about me”

That’s the song that most people seem to be listening to when they write their cover letters. I discussed the importance of getting in the hiring manager’s head in a previous blog post, but I still see cover letters that are completely focused on the writer and not the reader.

Cover letters can be a great way to get employers to notice you. Of course you always want to send one but what are some ways that your cover letter can actually hurt your chances of getting interviews?

1) You use ‘Dear Sir or Madame’ as your salutation.

It can be a lot of work to find out the name of the hiring manager or the person that your resume is being sent to. However, if you do, it will put you in the good graces of the hiring manager…at least to start off with.

2) The reader is left with the question of what job you are actually applying for in their organization.

You need to state the title of the job somewhere on your cover letter. It can be as a title or in the first paragraph. Hiring managers don’t want to guess which job you want. If they do, then you’ll likely get passed up for interviews.

This is another way you can personalize your cover letter. If you use the exact title for which they are hiring, then they’ll know that you took the time to tailor it just for them.

3) Your cover letter addresses none of the job requirements.

One way to really impress an employer is by their specific needs they listed in the job posting. This is where you can completely personalize your cover letter. Check out your achievements from your resume and see what is applicable to their needs. Pull a few and reword them a bit to add them as a bullet list on your cover letter.

4) You end it with a passive call to action.

You want to make the Hiring Manager do the least amount of work as possible in order for you to get an interview. One of the ways you can ease their burden is by calling them to follow-up. State that you will call them in a certain amount of time – say one week or on a specific date – and be sure to do it.

Don’t worry about coming across as to aggressive. It’s acting proactively which employers think highly of and you can expect them to take note. Of course they may call you even before you get a chance to give them a ring, but that’s a good thing.

5) No contact information.

I know you’re saying ‘Give me a break!’ It seems like that’s common sense, right? Not necessarily. Sometimes when job seekers create their own resume package, they only put their contact info on their resume, not their cover letter. But what happens if the two get separated and your resume accidentally gets tossed? Your desire to get an interview just got tossed along with it.

Paying attention to detail will go far when you’re job hunting. Don’t be in such a rush that you forgo some of these pointers. Take your time to do it right and you’ll find yourself getting many more employers wanting to meet you.
