CollegeRecruiter.com Study Shows a Decrease in Internships and Entry Level Jobs in Most States, Surprising Increase in Others

California, Texas and Florida see decrease in internship postings from September to August; Iowa, Arkansas and North Dakota among states experiencing greatest increases.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, October 5, 2009 - There's been a dramatic decrease in the number of internships and entry level jobs now actively being recruited for in several states, according to a recent study of employers conducted by CollegeRecuiter.com, the nation's leading job board for college students and new graduates. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate - 9.8% as of September - continues to rise.

The study shows that businesses in California, Texas, Florida and Washington, D.C., have experienced a decrease in active internship opportunities posted on CollegeRecruiter.com from September to October. Similarly, businesses in Montana, Mississippi and Vermont significantly decreased the number of internships posted on CollegeRecruiter.com by 27%, 32% and 38%, respectively. South Dakota saw a decrease of 27% in the number of entry-level jobs posted to the site over the same period.

In an effort to aid job seekers struggling to find employment, CollegeRecruiter.com earlier this year initiated a monthly survey of thousands of employers to identify the states with the most, and the fewest, internships and entry level jobs posted by employers. The data, which is updated at the beginning of each month, is gathered through a review of recruitment trends from each state and the District of Columbia, that have posted opportunities with CollegeRecruiter.com. The monthly review is intended to serve as a guide to help job seekers estimate the status of the job market in the states in which they live.

Of the five states with most opportunities, only New York has seen a 1% increase in the number of internships posted for October. The five states with the lowest number of entry level job and internship postings has similar results. North Dakota alone has seen a 25% increase in the number of internships posted and only Wyoming has seen a 28% increase in the number of entry level jobs posted to CollegeRecruiter.com for October. Most states have experience a reduction in the number of entry level jobs and internships posted by employers, but some states like Iowa (135%), Arkansas (64%) and Minnesota (44%), which have dramatically increased internship listings, are faring much better.
