Question:
I live in Virginia where you're allowed to work when you're 14 years old,
but no one will hire me even though I'm now 14. What should I do?
Answer:
Unemployment is at an all time low generally but for people of your age it
is at over 15 percent! That makes the job search a real challenge.
How are you looking for these jobs? Instead of checking things out in the
paper, learn the skill of talking to people. If there is a place where you
want to work, call up the person in charge and request a meeting. Tell them
your career goals and ask them how you can get started-- even at your
present age. Tell them your desires to get a job there and ask them what
skills you need to learn in order to get it.
Also, never make an issue of your age. An employer cannot legally ask about
your age unless it has something to do specifically with the job your are
pursuing. In many states, the legal work age is 14 but some states put
restrictions on how many hours you can work and even how late at night you
can be out. This puts employers in a difficult position. You can check out
the restrictions- if any-- for your area by doing some research through this

Also, check with local government-run employment agencies. Many have
programs for youths ages 14-18 that are seeking employment.
