Question:
I'm not an information technology (IT) professional, but have studied
computer programming for 2.5 years and have a degree in a different field. I
have studied C/C++, VB and VBA, but am most proficient in the VBA language.
I would like to be employed in the computer industry. What are my employment
prospects?
First Answer:
Excellent. The IT field is on fire and the Department of Labor projects
occupations related to IT to be the fastest growing occupations through
2008. In fact, there is such a need that candidates like you are very
attractive to companies because you already developed skill sets that will
allow you to quickly adapt to current technologies. So your prospects are
very, very good.
But you are going to need some current expert advice. Do you know of anyone
doing the kind of work you want to do? By connecting with someone in the
field, you stand a better chance of knowing what the current trends are and
where to best focus your efforts. Please see this article on how these kinds
of relationships work--and why they are so necessary:

Second Answer:
You need not have a computer programming degree to do well in this growing
field. Take the time to look at the numerous jobs posted in your local
newspaper or even one of the many on-line job banks. They usually are
asking for specific skills, not college degrees. If you truly know the
languages listed in your question, most major cities will have a job for you
at no less than 30K.
