Minnesota Reading Corps!
Minnesota Reading Corps is a Minnesota statewide AmeriCorps program that places members in elementary and preschool settings in many locations across Minnesota. There are three different positions available: Classroom Member, Literacy Coordinator, and Volunteer Coordinator.
All three positions are one year long; full-time and part-time positions are available. Training begins in August. Members receive a modest living allowance (about $850/month for FT, and about $425/month for PT). In addition, members receive an education award upon completion of their service year, to be used on student loans or future tuitions ($4,725 for FT, and $2,363 for PT). Full-time members receive free health care coverage and child care assistance.
The Classroom Member is embedded into a classroom of children ages 3 - 5 to develop children’s early literacy skills in preparation for kindergarten. The member collaborates with the classroom teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities and conduct literacy assessments to ensure children are on track to read by the end of 3rd grade.
The Literacy Coordinator works one-on-one with K-3 children who need help learning to read. The member will use prescribed literacy interventions and will conduct weekly progress monitoring to ensure the student is on track to read at the end of 3rd grade.
The Volunteer Coordinator is placed in an elementary school to recruit, train and / or manage community volunteers who dedicate time directly or indirectly helping young children learn to read. This member will also work one-on-one with children who need help learning to read. The member will use prescribed literacy interventions and will conduct weekly progress monitoring to ensure the student is on track to read at the end of 3rd grade.
