As a recruiter you need to stay on top of business news. Not only will being informed give you a sense of how markets are changing and what’s new, you’ll also be to monitor the names of the people and companies who are driving those changes. You will want to watch and target those movers and shakers.

For national and international business news, one of the standard bearers to turn to is The Wall Street Journal. You can read either the print edition or the online version, but each requires a paid subscription.

Your local paper is probably the best place to track local business news. Most papers have a business section and some of that content is probably available online. To see what local papers have an online presence, check out NewsCentral which covers not only the United States, but the entire world.

Another good source to examine for local business news from dozens of up-and-coming markets is American City Business Journals. Though the journals don’t include coverage from the nation’s three largest cities, over 41 hot business markets across the country are represented, from Seattle to South Florida and from Boston to the Bay Area. To jump to the homepage of the local business journal near you, go to the site’s List of Journals page.

Each journal covers the local business market with news, columns and focus articles. When a local business wins a contract, expands or downsizes, it's covered here. When the head of a local firm accepts an award or an entrepreneur speaks at a conference, you’ll be able to read about it here.

The site is an online version of the printed business journals, so not everything in the individual journals appears here. However, each of the journals maintains an archive of all the articles it has posted on the Internet, so you can easily research companies in a particular market.

Available exclusively on the ACBJ Web site are industry journals that focus on specific vertical markets. If you’re involved in banking & finance, demographics, health care, high tech, real estate, retailing & restaurants or the tourism & hospitality industries, there’s news here that is sure to interest you.

Under the Extra Edge category, ACBJ has an Industry Focus section, highlighting the week’s in-depth industry and region-specific coverage from each of the 41 cities. Focus topics can range from health care and technology to minorities and human resources.

A tour of American Cities will keep you up-to-date...whether you’re researching a particular industry or a specific location.
