Resumes, resumes, resumes.
The joy of resumes.
Imagine standing in the open field, gently caressed by the warm breezes of
spring, while resumes of superstar candidates waft their way lovingly around
you, just waiting for you to pluck them out of thin air.
Great image, eh?
Alas, unless you've become a contestant on that old game show "Treasure
Hunt" and convinced the host to wind-tunnel resumes instead of hundred
dollar bills at you, the above scenario will probably never happen. It
remains your challenge to come up with the candidates you need.
In an earlier newsletter, I mentioned the thrills galore that are waiting
for you at Altavista, when you could specify advanced searches by title and
url like so:
(title:resume or title:resumes or url:resume or url:resumes) and mba
in other words,
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?stype=&pg=aq&q=%28title%3Aresume+or+t
itle%3Aresumes+or+url%3Aresume+or+url%3Aresumes%29+and+mba&r=&kl=XX&d0=&d1=&
search.x=31&search.y=13
What if you wanted to specify by state? Try this trick - find all the area
codes in a particular state at http://www.newsdirectory.com and browsing to
the state in question, and then add those parameters to your query. For
example, the above query tailored to NJ would look like:
(title:resume or title:resumes or url:resume or url:resumes) and mba and
(201 or 973 or 609 or 856 or 732 or 908) and NJ
in other words,
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&q=%28title%3Aresume+or+title%3A
resumes+or+url%3Aresume+or+url%3Aresumes%29+and+mba+and+%28201+or+973+or+609
+or+856+or+732+or+908+%29+and+NJ&r=&kl=XX&d0=&d1=&search.x=26&search.y=7
While the above is joy beyond measure, however, some lonely, dreary day you
might find yourself yearning for another outlet to search.
Enter great big services like AOL!
Think of it. MegaServices generally have thousands and thousands and a
whole lot more subscribers. They even give away a free homepage for these
people! And what do people like putting up if they are new on the Internet?
Personal info including resumes!
This is one area non-tecchies, I'd imagine, utilize more frequently than
techno-nerds (after all, many IT/techno-nerds like yours truly configure
their own systems when using the Internet).
Let's try a search right now. Go to AOL Member pages at
http://hometown.aol.com/, and search on
resume sales "medical devices"
ie,
http://search.hometown.aol.com/find.adp?query=resume+sales+%22medical+device
s%22&cid=10000
Bingo! You'll find the resume of an individual who has 12 years of
International sales and general management experience in the Medical Devices
field. Perhaps he's not looking for a job, not yet. But depending upon how
you compose an introductory note, he might be able to point you in the
direction of fellow employees who are in the market.
Want another search? Try
resume realtor
Over a dozen Realtor resumes are returned, as well as folks who have had the
realtor experience under their belt.
'Course, you could always simply look at the main page of
http://hometown.aol.com and click on the word "resume". You'll be brought to
a resume search engine at http://hometown.aol.com/cat.adp?cid=19155&l=english .
It's amazing what you'll uncover when you simply just look.
