What do you do when you receive a job req that contains unfamiliar keywords? Throw it out? Of course not. Just take a few minutes to uncover quality resources!

It's most simple. Let's say, for example, that you've been asked to find, oh, people skilled in the usage of the IBM 4690 Operating System.

What to do now?

First, notice the vendor of the skill - it's IBM at http://www.ibm.com.

A vendor! And there's a search engine at that site!! Search for

IBM 4690

You'll be returned http://www.ibm.com/Search?v=9&q=%22IBM+4690%22&x=9&y=10.

Click on the first response that says, "MA5Z: MQSeries Client for IBM 4690 OS" at http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries/txppacs/ma5z.html.

You'll see

...MQSeries for 4690 OS client provides applications running on the IBM 4690 Point of Sale system with the ability to fully participate in the message driven processing world of MQSeries....

Ah hah! We now know it's a Point of Sales System (POS) - you can even find a pictures at http://www.raleigh.ibm.com/rds/marketing/photoalbum/html/SLIFE.HTM.

Hmmmm, though.....why is it pictured as a keyboard? At least we have a good keyword, though - it's POS.

Go back to the initial search page, and now search for

"IBM 4690" (note the quotes)

ie, http://www.ibm.com/Search?v=9&q=%22IBM+4690%22+POS.

The first response is IBM Retail Store Solutions at http://www2.clearlake.ibm.com/store/index.html. Since we already know your quarry is associated with POS, click on Products at http://www2.clearlake.ibm.com/store/product/index.html on the left.

On the resulting page, scroll down past "Software". You'll see an entry for the IBM 4690 Operating System at http://www2.clearlake.ibm.com/store/product/html/4690osv2.html. Success! And you'll see why it was pictured as a keyboard - it's an operating system that can *drive* a keyboard.

From that page, you'll be able find bunches of keywords to aid you in your search for candidates - POS, JRE, Java, Flat Panel Interface, etc.

Sure would be good if we could find a user group that deals with that, eh?

Go to Altavista at http://www.altavista.com and search for

+title:pos +"user group"

like so:
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=q&sc=on&q=%2Btitle%3Apos+%2B%22use r+group%22&kl=XX&stype=stext

The above query searches for the word POS in the title, and "user group" in the page.

You'll find a link to the IBM POS & Store Systems User Group Home Page at http://www.ibmstoresystemsug.org/. You might want to consider contacting them and showcasing what you have to offer.

The above is simply one way to find candidates with the skills you need. Be sure to check out The Internet Recruiting Edge for lots more examples at http://www.barbaraling.com/recruiting.html.
