Here's a question I hear almost every week from clients: "What's the difference between an ASCII resume and a scannable resume?"

An ASCII (or plain text resume) is meant to be send by e-mail to employers. You may also upload it to resume databases, such as monster.com. It should contain a list of keywords -- nouns that describe your duties and achievements.

A scannable resume should also contain keywords. It's meant to be printed on plain white paper and scanned by a computer, which looks screens out thousands of applicants at larger firms.

In a nutshell, all scannable resumes are meant to be printed and sent with a standard stationery resume. This will help you make a positive impression to the person who reads and feeds your resume into the scanner.

By contrast, ASCII resumes are rarely printed. They reside exclusively in the resume databases where they're uploaded until found by employers doing a keyword search.
