PURPOSE OF POSITION: To assist pharmacists with the preparation of medications for dispensing to infant, children and adolescent patients and patient care areas. To perform related technical and supportive tasks necessary to provide pharmacy services. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Prepare unit dose, ambulatory and sterile dosage forms for dispensing. 2. Interpret physician orders, prepare dispensing records, type labels and calculate doses and drug volumes for drug dosages. 3. Fill and deliver medication carts/drawers to patient care areas. Account for any missing medications. 4. Prepare batch labels and repackage drugs from stock solutions. 5. Prime administration tubing for central IV lines using setup for Hickman Protocol. 6. Prepare total parenteral nutrition admixtures using automated equipment or manually. 7. Interact with pharmacy and hospital computer systems as necessary to maintain records, generate billing, labels and reports. 8. Credit returned medications. 9. Maintain inventory and stock levels and equipment as necessary. 10. File orders and D/C patient files. 11. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families. 12. Answer, screen and direct telephone calls. 13. Follow policies and procedures governing the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information. 14. Comply with policies and procedures governing the prescribing, ordering, preparation and dispensing of medication as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. 15. Provide services and consultation in a manner to be regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of Cincinnati Children's patients as determined by department management and the medical staff. 16. Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature and seminars. Implement this knowledge into the pharmacy. 17. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions. 18. Attend required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures. 19. Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency. 20. Understands, adheres to and models Core Standards as defined organizationally and specifically within the department/unit. 21. Perform other duties as assigned REQUIRED SKILLS: Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrate manual dexterity, clerical accuracy and attention to detail. Mathematic ability sufficient to perform complex calculations; reading ability sufficient to interpret written instructions and recipes. Knowledge of aseptic technique and IV preparation, and a familiarity with medical and scientific terminology are preferred. Typing skills preferred. EDUCATION\WORK EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree or Certificate in Pharmacy Technology required by the following year, 1 year previous pharmacy related experience required.
