I don't think that we've featured any internships in Venture Capital yet, but today that's going to change. From what I've heard, it seems like there just aren't that many internships in VC to start with, and when there are, they get snapped up almost immediately. That's why I was pretty interested when I got word that vSpring Capital is now recruiting for their Summer Internship Program. They're based out of Salt Lake City, UT, and they've funded a portfolio of companies that work in the Software, Communications, Internet, and Life Sciences industries. I don't recognize any of their portfolio companies by name, but some of them look pretty cool, so you should check them out. Continue reading about vSpring Capital...

This weekend my Dad e-mailed me about a company that had just moved to Connecticut (where I'm originally from). Connecticut has been working hard to attract the movie industry to the state - they even have what is called a "Hollywood East Task Force" in Hartford - so it's big news when a company like Blue Sky Studios makes a move to Connecticut because they've been bribed by tax credits. It certainly brings a lot of jobs (and internships) to Connecticut (even though New York loses just as many.) As interesting as it is that Connecticut is trying to become "Hollywood East," it's not nearly as interesting as what Blue Sky Studios does. They "pioneer creatively superior photo-realistic, high-resolution, computer-generated character animation for the feature film, television and entertainment industries." Put more simply, they're behind feature films like Ice Age, Horton Hears a Who, and Robots, and some pretty cool shorts too. Continue reading about Blue Sky Studios...

Internship searching is hard enough on it's own. When you have to worry about not being able to feed yourself over the summer because you might have to take an unpaid internship, it can become overwhelming. Obviously the best remedy is to find a paid internship, but that's easier said than done. What you can do to ease your financial fears for the summer is to start paying attention to personal finance (that's a link to Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich, because he's the go to guy for that kind of stuff). You can also start using Thrive, a website that "brings all your credit card, checking, savings, retirement, and investment accounts into one place so you can easily see what you have, what you owe, and where you can grow." They're based out of New York City, and as far as I can tell they're offering a product that is extremely similar to Mint, which has been on my radar for well over a year now. Still, Thrive appears to have developed a great tool for monitoring your personal finances, and since they're hiring paid interns, we thought we should take a look at them. Two students will soon have the chance of a lifetime to complete a prestigious internship.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, recently announced that two students or recent graduates from St. Thomas - located in St. Paul, Minnesota - will be offered internships next year. The Holy See is the Vatican Mission in New York City.

The interns chosen will act as staff to members of the United Nations Mission, as well as perform responsibilities like monitoring the actions of United Nations bodies and representing the Holy See in different meetings, according to an article by the Bulletin Today.

One internship will take place from Sept. 1, 2009, to the end of December 2009, the period that the Security Council is in session. The other internship will take place from Sept. 1, 2009, to the end of July 2010. Each internship will include room and board at the Vatican Mission and a stipend of $800 per month.

Students interested in either internship may apply, regardless of academic major. However, students must: be a senior, graduate student or recent graduate of St. Thomas; have a strong academic record; have a demonstrated knowledge and interest in international politics, economics or law and be of good moral character and an informed and committed Catholic.

Applications should include a resume and a 500 to 1,000-word letter expressing interest in the position and highlighting qualifications. Each applicant also should arrange for the submission of three letters of recommendation, including at least two from St. Thomas faculty members, and provide academic transcripts.

Those interested must complete an application by Feb. 16, 2009, and mail it to: Dr. Susan Alexander, Mail #AQU 102. The selection process will be completed by a committee of faculty and administrators at the university, and all finalists should expect to be interviewed by the selection committee and Migliore.

The other day I got a fantastic restaurant recommendation over Twitter, and yesterday the same person gave me a great recommendation on internships with the company that she works at, Walker Sands Communications. They're a well known Chicago based PR firm with a specialization in Technology. Their three areas of expertise are PR, Design, and Strategic Marketing. Walker Sands also puts a strong emphasis on the entrepreneurial mindset - many of the people on their staff have built companies of their own. I always find it hard to find a point of differentiation between PR firms because they're obviously very good at making themselves look good. The staff is usually what separates one firm from another, but it's hard to judge a staff without working with them. I've always found it helpful to check out the firm's client list to see if there are any names that you could get excited about working with. Continue reading about Walker Sands Communications...

Maybe it's just me, but I swear that whenever I'm writing about an internship that has seasonal ties, I'm writing about it in the wrong season. That's not the case today. Although Chicago is pretty flat, I don't think we've seen a day above freezing in months. I'd imagine the snow at the ski resorts across the country has to be in great shape this year. I guess with these internships, you'll be applying when the time is right, but if you land the internship for the summer or fall, it won't be ski season anymore. That's ok, if you can't be skiiing, you might as well be thinking about it while interning at Skiing Magazine. I think that it's pretty obvious what Skiing Magazine is all about, although I'd be interested to know how it differs from SKI Magazine which is put out by the same publisher, Bonnier Corporation. Thumbnail image for Lauren Berger.jpg Lauren "The Internship Queen" Berger has expands her internship advice to YouTube

Video really is the wave of the future and Lauren Berger has joined the myriad other experts lending their advice on YouTube. Titled "The Internship Minute," Lauren's podcasts give college students lots of advice about what they should and should not do during their internships.

"The Internship Minute" is really about two and a half minutes long, but it's like a super short infomercial giving you information that's 100 percent useful. And after doing 15 internships, I think it's safe to say she knows what she's talking about, plus she stays current by following other experts in the career and internship fields.

Berger's "The Internship Minute" is a series that Berger will update weekly with new information. Anyone interested in subscribing to Berger's podcasts can do so easily through YouTube.

The first day of your internship can be nerve-racking. You don't know who you will meet, how [he] will treat you, or what to expect. I put together a list of things that students should bring with them to their internships. Read this over and bring everything I mention. As always, it's best to be overprepared. Think of this as your "Internship First Day Survival Kit".

Good luck !

xo The Intern Queen.

What To Bring On The First Day of Your Internship

Notebook: In your notebook, you should write down the following information before your internship begins:

Information about the parking situation. DO NOT wait until the first day of your internship to find this out. This will cause you to be late. Make sure to get clear instructions from your coordinator the week before you internship and write them down in a notebook designated for internship information.

Any extra notes on the Dress Code. Unsure what shoes you can wear ? Make sure to ask any questions you might have about the dress code for the company before your first day. Listen and take notes the first time so you don't have to ask multiple times. Be the intern that gets it right.

The company mission statement. Get this from the website. This will help you learn why the company is doing certain things and where they are headed. This will also allow you to see how your work is helping to acheive the company's larger goals.

Put the company address in your notebook. Get in the habit of always including cross streets when you write an address. This will come in handy as you continue on your career path. Also make sure you have the direct number for you internship coordinator in case you get lost or are running late. Don't run late.

If you know anyone who works at the company, or you have already made friends, write down their names and emails. You want to keep track of all of the people you meet.

Write down the company website. You want to appear very knowledgable about the company. If you are asked to go to their website that should be a no-brainer.

Folder: The folder is to make sure important documents that you bring and may recieve stay clean and uncrumpled. The following things should be kept in your Internship Folder:

  • Photo Copy of your Drivers Liscense/ID
  • Photo Copy of your Social Security Card
  • Any Passport/Visa documentation you might need (only applies if you are coming from another country)
  • Any past paperwork you have recieved from your internship coordinator
  • Your internship paperwork from your school counselor/career center
  • Any parking passes that you might need to later validate

In Your Wallet: You should have the following items in your wallet on the first day of your internship:

  • At least $15.00 cash for lunch on your first day
  • Drivers Liscense
  • Social Security Card
  • Credit Card (just to be safe)

Also bring a few Pens and Pencils to be ultra prepared. I also suggest bringing some sort of snack (nuts, fruit, granola bar) you never know when/if they will give you a lunch!

Even if your college or university isn't giving you the day off from classes, I hope that you remembered that today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It's an important day to reflect, and it's becoming even more important as there is a growing movement to make MLK Day a day of national service. They're calling it "a day on, not a day off," and I think it would be pretty cool to see employers and schools embrace this movement. It's the next step in making Dr. King's dream come true. If one day of service just isn't enough for you to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., then you might want to consider an internship at The King Center in Atlanta, GA. The King Center is located on a privately owned inholding within the authorized boundaries of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, and it is "dedicated to the advancement of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." Continue reading about The King Center...

These days it seems like more and more internships are unpaid. With the economy the way it is, people want to get their work done for free. We don't mind it so much when it's coming from non-profits, but areas like journalism seem to be some of the worst offenders when it comes to not paying interns who are doing valuable work. Today we're going to at internships with The American Spectator - a journalistic publication run by a non-profit organization that actually pays their interns. The Spectator's roots were planted in "1924 by George Nathan and Truman Newberry over a cheap domestic ale in McSorley's Old Ale House," but The American Spectator as we know it wasn't started until 1967 when the Saturday Evening Club took over the defunct publication. Today The Spectator, published by the non-profit American Spectator Foundation, is a monthly magazine covering news and politics with a strong conservative slant. Internships are often a good way to figure out what you want to do with your life. They are a low commitment way to make sure that your expectations for a given career are realistic. Today's internships still provide an opportunity for students to try out a career path, but they're reserved or students who have demonstrated an extremely serious interest in space science research. The Space Studies Board is a division within the National Academies (a non-profit organization that advises the nation on Science, Engineering, and Medicine) that focuses on space research. The Board is based in Washington, DC and was founded in 1958. They "oversee advisory studies and program assessments, facilitates international research coordination, and promotes communications on space science and science policy between the research community, the federal government, and the interested public." If you're committed to studying space, you need to intern with the Space Studies Board. Continue reading about Space Studies Board...

The University of Dreams (UOD) is an all-inclusive internship placement service that offers opportunities for college students in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Washington D.C., Barcelona, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Costa Rica. Periodically I receive questions about the legitimacy of the program and if I would recommend UOD to students.

First of all, UOD is a legitimate program offering a substantial number of internships to students in very reputable companies in the U.S. and abroad. UOD summer programs include housing, a meal plan, activities, and seminars as well. Although I think the cost of the program can be prohibitive for many students, due to UOD's professional connections, I do believe that students may be able to get an internship through UOD that they might have difficulty getting otherwise. For this reason, I highly recommend that students look closely at the Scholarship Programs that UOD offers. Continue reading about the University of Dreams ...

For a long time fruit juices other than orange juice (and prune juice) were largely the domain of young children. I'm not sure why this was, but I still to this day feel like a kid when I drink juice. Over the past few years we've seen juice gain in popularity - not grape or apple juice, but more exotic juices like pomegranate, cherry, and acai. POM Wonderful has been one of the companies that profited the most from the upswing in adult juice consumption. Maybe it's all of the health benefits of the pomegranate that is convincing adults to hit the juice. It's hard to not like something that improves cardiovascular and prostate health while also improving erectile function. Not to mention that pomegranates are loaded with antioxidants. With those health benefits and great marketing, POM Wonderful is primed for continued success - they're the largest producer of pomegranates in the United States. This is a guest post by Lauren Berger aka "The Intern Queen."

Who says everyone can't read Family-Related magazines? These magazines aim to lure in people of all ages with their articles about all stages of family life - from baby to tween to pre-parent to grandmother. Family Circle is one of the "family" titles that I especially enjoy. Between the magazine and the website, my favorite articles are the ones that cover Teen trauma issues: such as alcoholism and education. My favorite feature on the website is their delicious recipes that I try oh-so-hard to copy in my own apartment kitchen! Family Circle Magazine is a title put out by the Meredith Corporation - known for titles like PARENTS, MORE, AMERICAN BABY, etc. Family Circle's content covers a wide variety of food, health, family, parenting, teen, adolescent topics. Both the Family Circle Magazine and the Family Circle Website, www.familycircle.com, are looking for interns for the Spring of 2009 and the Summer of 2009 in their New York City offices.

Many opportunities exist for students interested in premed, science, and healthcare careers especially if they have an interest in participating in research. Medical and graduate schools look for applicants who have had a broad range of laboratory and research experience and the more exposure students have to these types of opportunities, the better. The National Institute of Health offers many unique research opportunities as well as internships that are available through The American Medical Student Association.

Recently I learned about a new opportunity for students interested in premed and healthcare. RateADrug offers college students a unique opportunity to work with prescription drug users by actually documenting their personal experiences when taking the drug. I believe that this offers an opportunity for students to really make a difference while giving them exposure to working with people regarding health issues and learning more about all of the drugs that are currently on the market. Because of the tight economy, some employers are putting their internship programs on hold. Of those who aren't, they are a lot pickier than they were before things got bad. So how does a busy college student get valuable work experience? One way is by applying for a work from home job. ProfitonInternet.com is just one of many sites that allows anyone interested in working from home to select from thousands of job listings.

College students often have busy class schedules and active social lives, so many wait until the summer to do their internships. But for those who like doing internships during the fall and spring semesters, working online might be just the ticket. There always seems to be a demand for data entry clerks and typists, so that's one way to earn money while getting practical work experience like meeting deadlines and working with others to complete a project. For writing majors who are struggling to find writing internships, ProfitonInternet.com has plenty of writing jobs posted, too. There's even a section on the site for people interested in earning money on ebay. Imagine that!

Earning money online is especially great for students who have unpaid internships because it allows them to set work around their class and work schedules. And they will get additional work experience to add to their resumes. There's really no downside.

Here at One Day, One Internship, we're big on storytelling. The reason that we feature a new company every day is that a lot of companies aren't very good at telling their own stories, and even if they are, there's a good chance that you've never heard their stories. Brooklyn, NY based MediaStorm is one of those companies that excels at telling its own story - probably because their "principal aim is to usher in the next generation of multimedia storytelling by publishing social documentary projects incorporating photojournalism, interactivity, animation, audio and video for distribution across multiple media." They've worked on some amazing projects that include Intended Consequences, a chronicle of the lives of Rwandan women who "were subjected to massive sexual violence, perpetrated by members of the infamous Hutu militia groups known as the Interahamwe," and The Marlboro Marine, the story of a marine whose photograph became famous and how he "tried to return to his previous life but found his nights haunted by images of war and his life fractured by depression." MediaStorm seems to deal with a lot of heavy topics, but they certainly have mastered multimedia storytelling. Continue reading about MediaStorm...

Just a few days ago, I told you about my early love for Hip Hop when I brought you the details on Hot 97's internships. Today I've found some more internships that take me back to my days of having my Mom drive me to Sam Goody to get the newest Rap CD. They're with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) in Atlanta, GA. Whether you sided with Biggie or Pac, if you want to work in an "environment that encourages freedom of expression, serves as a resource for families, and empowers via education," then the TASF is the perfect place for you to intern. Tupac Shakur's life may have been tragically cut short, but his legacy continues to live on, both through his music and his foundation. Although much of his public persona was based on the "Thug Life" image, Tupac definitely had a softer side and a love for the arts. That certainly comes through in the work of his foundation. I'm not going to start an Economics debate on a Saturday morning, but I'm tempted. Trickle Up is a non-profit organization that was named as a slap in the face to the theory of trickle-down economics. Regardless of their economic philosophy, they appear to be doing great work by empowering "people living on less than $1 a day to take the first steps out of poverty, providing them with resources to build microenterprises for a better quality of life." Trickle Up is based out of New York City, and they believe strongly in microfinance, micropreneurship, and microenterprises as being the solution to worldwide poverty. Their website does a great job of telling their story, so I recommend that you check it out to get a full feel for whom Trickle Up helps and how they do it. Continue reading about Trickle Up...

If there's ever a time to intern at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, it is now. What's the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency? It's a bureau of the the U.S. Department of the Treasury that was chartered in 1863 to ensure a safe and sound national banking system for all Americans. How do they do that? They have a nationwide staff that "conducts on-site reviews of national banks and provides sustained supervision of bank operations. The agency issues rules, legal interpretations, and corporate decisions concerning banking, bank investments, bank community development activities, and other aspects of bank operations." I think that it's pretty obvious why the OCC has become a lot busier in the past couple of years. So instead of worrying about how there will be no jobs in finance when you graduate, you should see if you can land an internship with one of the government agencies that is dealing with our banking problems head on. I think it was 6th or 7th grade when I started listening to Hip Hop. It started out with a few CD purchases, but soon enough I was listening to Hot 97 at every free moment. That included car rides with my parents. I still can't believe that my parents drove around town with me sitting in the front seat ensuring that radio was dialed in to 97.1, but they let me get away with it. I'm sure that they weren't too happy about it, but I guess that's part of having kids. Anyway, Hot 97 is still my go to radio station when I'm back in the NYC metro area, and it still seems to be one of the most respected Hip Hop and R&B radio stations in the country. There's not much more that I can say about them, so let's take a look at their internships. Continue reading about Hot 97...

We've all seen what others wear to internship or job interviews and been very judgemental. That skirt's too short. Is she trying to be seductive ? Those pants don't match that jacket ! Why is she wearing hooker heels to a professional interview ? Why does he look like George of the Jungle for an interview ? Her dress looks like it's from the 1984 Ann Taylor catalog.

Anyhow, I wanted to go through a list of tips so that we all are aware of what IS acceptable to wear to an interview and what is NOT. These tips are for the average business interview (ie: marketing, journalism, public relations, finance, law, advertising, media, etc). Just because you are interviewing to be an intern does NOT mean you get to DRESS like a college kid. The same dress code standards should be obeyed - as if you were an employee of the company. Are Letters of Recommendation really necessary ? Not always. BUT, this does not mean that you shouldn't ALWAYS have a great LOR (Letter of Rec) on hand. Below are some pointers on how to make sure that your LORs are the best of the best !

How to Get Great Letters of Recommendation

Write it ! My biggest tip is to approach a former employer, teacher, friend-of-family and say, "I need a letter of recommendation for an internship, if I write one, do you mind looking over it and signing it ? I know you are busy." This ensures that your letter will read exactly as you like it ! Let's be honest. Most employers are busy and don't want or have time to write you that smoking letter that stands out. This is the approach I have used and employers actually appreciate that I'm trying to save them time. They will make any changes they see suitable and print out on company letterhead. Unless you go to see fewer movies than I do, then you know about DreamWorks. On the animation side they've done Shrek, Antz, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and more. On the film side they've done Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, American Beauty, Gladiator, Old School, Transformers, and many more. They make great movies, and they've been very successful. It's no surprise considering they were started by media moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. If you don't recognize their logo, then you probably shouldn't be looking for a internship in the entertainment industry. Traveling for an internship has become extremely popular. With summer internships around the corner, I thought, what better than an article on How To NAIL the Phone Interview. Most students that plan to intern at companies that are located in another city will first participate in a phone interview. The phone interview will decide if the candidate should be brought in the office for an in-person interview. In many cases, the phone interview can get you the internship. Personally, I conduct phone interviews with students that intern with me. About 50 percent of the companies I work with also conduct phone interviews that determine if the student gets the internship. This saves time and effort for both the student and the employer. As much as we might not like them, cover letters are still a necessary part of the internship application process. Many professionals suggest that a Cover Letter or "CL" is more important than a resume. Cover Letters are your "on paper" greeting and introduction to potential employers. When applying for internships, you should send both a cover letter and a resume. At the bottom of your resume, I suggest including the following statement: *References are available upon request. Lists courtesy of Willy Franzen and One Day, One Internship

There were a lot of internship - and entry level job - opportunities cross posted on this site in 2008. Willy Franzen has graciously compiled 10 lists of employers, both for profit and non-profit, who regularly offer internships.

Here a links to all of the End of the Year Recaps:

Internships:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7
Part 8
Non-profit part 1
Non profit part 2

Entry Level Jobs:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7
Part 8
Non-profits Part 1
Non-profits Part 2

These lists may seem redundant but they're not. Some employers only had one or the other opportunity available. Of course, Franzen has already begun reviewing the employers that will appear on his end of the year recap for 2009.

Not only is it Friday, but it's also a Snow Day here in Chicago! Judging from the map on The Weather Channel, there's a good chance that you're enjoying a Snow Day too. My favorite thing to do when school was cancelled was to go sledding, and I haven't outgrown it yet. If downtown Chicago had a single decent hill, I'd be there as soon as I finish writing this. Of course, I'd have to stop and buy a sled first. In college it's easy - you just "borrow" a tray from the dining hall, and that's your sled for the winter, but when you're an adult you need to take things a little more seriously. That's why Hammerhead Sleds exists. They make sleds for big kids. Actually, that's an understatement. They make the most bad ass sleds that I have ever seen. These sleds aren't cheap, though. They run $349, but they sure look worth it. Continue reading about Hammerhead Sleds...

Most internship application processes seem like contests - you apply and you find out if you've won. The only problem is that the prize is often an unpaid gig getting coffee and sitting in a cubicle doing menial tasks. We try to avoid talking about those kinds of internships here, but it's hard to know what an internship is really like without actually doing it. So, how about an internship where winning is actually winning? STA Travel is currently making a big deal about their 2009 World Traveler Internship Program. They're looking for multiple interns to "traverse the globe experiencing a number of travel adventures and showcasing their experiences daily via a journal/blog, video and podcasts." It might not offer the best real world work experience, but it makes up for it with life experience and awesomeness. If you haven't heard of them already, STA Travel is world's largest student travel agency. They want to improve students' lives by making it easy and cost effective for them to travel, and these internships tie right in with that goal. Continue reading about STA Travel...

Event marketing seems to be an area where a lot of internships end up being more like scams than internships. The reason is that event marketing internships are in high demand, so shady companies use ads for them to catch lots of candidates. There's a reason that these types of internships are in high demand, and we think we've found some that exemplify the positive qualities of internships in event and experiential marketing. They're with All Terrain, a Chicago-based event marketing firm. We first found out about them through Twitter, and did some more research to see what they're all about. They've worked with top clients to do some pretty cool promotions. They even provide case studies on their website, which is a great thing to look for if you're trying to determine the legitimacy of a company. There's no better way to get a feel for a company than to take a look at the work that they've done and whom they've done it with. Continue reading about All Terrain...

It's amazing to think that a publication started by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., and James Russell Lowell in 1857 is still kicking. The Atlantic has morphed from a focus on literary and cultural affairs to more broadly attacking the topics of foreign affairs, politics, economics, and cultural trends. It has also joined forces with National Journal and Government Executive to form Atlantic Media. Their publications are a little more advanced than Highlights and Mad Magazine, which is why a recent rebranding effort was probably necessary. Appealing to people's intellectual sides just isn't the best way to sell magazines, unfortunately. With lots of changes going on at Atlantic Media, and National Journal Group's political trade journals still bringing money, now might be an interesting time to consider interning with Atlantic Media. Thumbnail image for Penny Loretto.jpgWinter break will be ending soon and college students will be heading back to classes and either starting spring internships or searching for summer ones. And, honestly, internship searches aren't so different from job searches. But there are some differences and it helps when there are experts on the subject like Penny Loretto and " The Intern Queen," Lauren Berger, to help students understand everything that's involved in internships Thumbnail image for Lauren Berger.jpg

Recently, Loretto wrote a profile of Berger for her own blog. Following these two ladies' blogs, plus keeping up with Berger's internship listings on Quarterlife.com, will have college students fully prepared for their first internship experiences. More importantly, all the techniques learned during internship searches can be used to find entry level jobs after graduation.

Best of luck to all college students who will be internship hunting in 2009.
