How to shine in a trial position

Reprinted courtesy of TheCareerNews.com

VANCOUVER, WA -- If you show up on time to a temp position and do what you say you are going to do, you are way ahead of a great portion of society. My daughter, Tami, was working as an Intern in Washington, D.C. She had finished all of her work and went to her supervisor and said, "I need something more to do." Her supervisor said, "Tami, in all the time I have been working here, no Intern has ever come to me and asked for more work." She was offered a full-time position at the agency.

Seek out opportunities to go beyond the job assigned to you. Perhaps, the assignment to the company was for only a week. That's enough time to get noticed! It feels great to have the Temporary Agency call you up and say, "Frank, XYZ Company appreciated your work and attitude and they want you to work on a year long contract." Would you take the assignment?

By the end of the year, you may have made yourself totally indispensable to the company. Do not expect a raise when you move off temporary status to full-time. Some people assume that since they did a good job, the company will recognize them by giving them a raise. The company recognized your efforts by hiring you full-time. Keep in mind that the benefits you will now be receiving are worth a great deal.
