Online Applicant Beware

Here are a few of the perils of Internet job searching: e-mail harvesters, affiliate hunters, identity thieves, money launderers, crooks looking for mules, and traffickers in stolen goods.

And these are just some of the scams I've come across this year.

The Impact of My Mistakes and the Success I Found in College

Is the Statement, "In a Matter of a Couple of Weeks, You'll Be Surrounded by 'friends' You've Never Met and Failing Most of Your Classes - but You Won't Care!" Made by a College Student True?

Provided By: Associated Content, Inc.

In the essay "How to Waste Your Life on Facebook" the author makes the claim that, "In a matter of a couple of weeks, you'll be surrounded by 'friends' you've never met and failing most of your classes - but you won't care!" In too many cases with social networking sites, on-line journals or blogs, and chat rooms this can be all too true.

When most people think about interior design jobs, they have the same picture occur to them. They picture the classic interior decorator, helping stay-at-home wives or husbands in middle or upper income brackets to decide on just the right drapery, the correct living room layout, or how to position their paintings to take advantage of the lighting in the room.

There was a time when I thought the world was a perfectly safe place. A utopia of sorts. Then I turned three. Suddenly many dangers were blatantly obvious to me. Okay, maybe it was more like seven or eight.

Tips to Help You Dress for Success!

Provided By: Associated Content, Inc.

The first impression made toward a job interview will likely be your resume or your skills and application, but the first impression you make in person will be how you carry yourself and dress. If a potential employee does not care enough about the job interview to put their best foot forward, then any employer will assume you won’t care much about your appearance on the job either.

Some Subjects Are Taboo During Job Interviews

You can dress professionally, carry a briefcase and smile your brightest, but you still need to ask the right questions - and give the right answers - during a job interview.

There are some obvious topics you should avoid in a job interview - much like a dinner party - such as sex, politics and religion (unless you're applying for a job as a stripper, lobbyist or minister, respectively).

A New York company is now promoting "plastic" as a new way of paying employees. The reason lies behind the belief that paying workers around the world is costly after dealing with the expense of wire transfers or check delays in the mail. One company is issuing prepaid debit cards through another source of credit. Once received by the employee, payments are made immediately and electronically. Like other debit cards, these prepaid cards can be used to make purchases or withdraw cash from ATMs in a local currency.

The New York company says ATM fees are frequently less expensive than wire transfer fees; some employers will even fund new costs their workers acquire. One market research firm estimates around $11.3 billion dollars in U.S. wages were paid from prepaid cards a year ago. Before now, these prepaid cards were greatly targeted to lower-income individuals not having bank accounts. Perhaps, we might be seeing a new trend for pay days in the future.

Our society so values education that sociologists have recognized the problem of "over-education" (Hadjicostandi). Many people are spending years pursuing degrees which they simply do not need for the jobs they perform.

Introduction

On a daily basis, humans communicate with one another through personal and mass communication. Personal communication is two-way conversation between small groups of people. Mass communication, in contrast, is one-way contact directed towards large audiences of people.

Coming from a poor background in a rural West Virginia town, I have seen firsthand what the lack of legal assistance can do to our state's poor. Find Out How to Target Your Strengths and Skills Towards an Occupation that Will Suit You

Provided By: Associated Content, Inc.

Many high school students have the anticipation and expectation of going to college.

While parents expect their children to go to college so that they will gain a valuable education and have a greater chance of getting a job to support themselves and inevitably make their way in this world.

High school students, on the other hand, see college as a way to gain liberation, academic opportunities and pursuits, freedom from their parents' dictatorship and a chance to have fun and be out on their own.

With these two conflicting viewpoints, a college education may be a slight source of stress in the home.

Careers and Stereotypes

I find it a bit disheartening that someone's occupation is often the primary descriptor of who they are or what they are doing with their life. Furthermore, there are many assumptions and unconscious biases that correspond with various occupations, further pigeonholing people into a box.

With many companies investing in the global market, employers seek employees with ability to speak second languages and understand other cultures. Study abroad offers students a competitive edge to start their career.

One university professor up in Washington requires students in her environmental history course to write an original article of a known source, or at least a greatly revised version of the existing one. No big paper is due at the end of the semester; this is probably to keep her students active throughout the semester. The professor became inspired when preparing teaching materials for class and thought maybe her students could fill in the missing information from her research of this source.

We all need to be careful of the sources we use by providing accurate information (to the best of our knowledge) from reliable sources. College students and all students doing research for papers might want to be more particular about what resources are available to them. The college professor says the creation of the Web has caused the quality of sources used by students to diminish.

However, she described her experiment of rewriting the source as "transformative" and proved to be an upgrade for her students' writing. The opportunity gave them a chance to write online about a subject instead of the normal undergraduate research paper. These students worked harder once they knew their work would be online and not just reviewed by their professor. Higher standards of writing are also expected from those who monitor the original source for truthful information and an unbiased tone. In addition, the professor expressed how this exercise gave her students an idea of what it is like to work in the real world of peer-reviewed research.

For the past several years the argument over affirmative action has been a highly debated topic. The issue at hand is whether or not affirmative action is reverse discrimination or not. Affirmative action by definition "means taking positive steps to end discrimination, to prevent its recurrence, and to create new opportunities that were previously denied to qualified women and people of color," (Work & Family).

A local college student in my area is currently spending the fall semester as an intern for the U.S. Supreme Court. She is a senior majoring in political science. The opportunity for this internship came through the South Carolina Washington Semester program by way of her school. She works in the admissions office and the branch of clerk's office. Her responsibilities include processing applications from attorneys who want to join the Supreme Court Bar, answering phones, entering dates into a computer, sorting mail, typing up forms for the admissions ceremony, and sitting at the Supreme Court Bar Desk. She also answers any questions concerning admittance to the Supreme Court or anything relating to the clerk's office.

The career goal of this young lady is to become a lawyer specializing in constitutional law, and she believes the internship will open up doors for the future. After finishing school, she wants to go to law school in Washington D.C. and focus on the federal government. She would also like to live and work in our nation's capital.

A factor in receiving this internship was the shortage of Supreme Court interns. Normally, regular positions are filled, but her supervisior said it was meant to be, while the future attorney said it was divine intervention. It just goes to show all of us that you never know what may happen if you try. The senior is enjoying her internship and considers it an honor to work in a building where several landmark decisions have been made, and some of the most important and powerful people in the American government exist.

The Digital Divide

The digital divide is the gap between those that have ready availability to digital technology and what it offers, and those that do not. A good example of this is one student having access to the internet and thus the information that can be obtained there, and another student not having access to the internet or perhaps even a computer.

Gliding Through College Hurts More Than it Helps

I graduate with my Bachelor's degree in May. I'm an English major, which is the 3rd incarnation of a major I've held, and I do love it. The problem I am facing now is that I must leave behind the college town, parties, and most of the friends who've become like family to me during the last four years in order to head into the "real world" and graduate schools.

Many teachers and professors in America preach about the glory of a balanced education; they say that it makes us rational, creative, innovative, and pragmatic. 'Preach' is really the most accurate way to describe it, because their speeches on the wonders of education are nothing short of sermons.

Everyone who's graduated from college has heard the following question atleast (if not more than, depending on how many people actually like you) fifty times: So what are you doing now?

Well, I can tell you that after about the tenth time, I was ready to ring the neck of the next person who asked me.
