If You Don't Succeed...

I started searching other colleges after Lesley regretted to inform me that they couldn't accept me into the program (this is to clarify for a certain someone). I found two and a possible other, but I'll apply to two right now. Columbia College Chicago and UMass Amherst are the schools that I'll try and see if I can get into their Creative Writing programs. It's no big deal that I didn't get into Lesley; I see that now. I still have the provisional acceptance at Rosemont, but if I don't pass those two courses and get a B average, that'll be money down the drain that could've gone to something important. So...I have to track down my professors and ask if they can write another recommendation for me, which will be hard since one is in England. Hopefully, they can do this and I can wait in agony and see whether I'm accepted or not.

You have a lot to offer Rebecca. From the few things you've revealed about yourself, I believe that is very true. In your last post, you received some suggestions for your application personal statement. Consider what the schools are looking for in a student and emphasize how you fit that picture. Play up your accomplishments, especially the ones discussed in your last post comments. If you need a critique of your statement, we'll talk about how that can be worked out.

You're disappointed about Lesley and the rationalization still resounds in your words. As you say, these other schools may have something better to offer with their programs, something unique that will serve your needs.

I'm definitely glad that you're re-connecting with your former professors. As for the one in England, don't let the water be a barrier to your communicating. I've been talking to people in England via the Internet since 1997! It isn't that difficult to do. Remember to speak in positive, upbeat tone. That last sentence has a tinge of pessimism that you don't want to convey. Some other content in your post has a tinge of sarcasm.

You've made your first stab at applying to an advanced degree school. That was probably the first time ever. Maybe it was done without any coaching nor any idea of what to do or how to do it. So that was a great first step, first effort, and a learning experience. Now that you have some ideas about the process (and more time), you can fine tune your efforts and get into a great experience.

I look forward to hearing more about your endeavors. I look forward to reading your posts that respond to the career development exercises ( see http://www.collegerecruiter.com/gazette/archives/2006/10/career_development_exercises_f.php ). They'll be useful for you as you develop your new personal statement and application packages.
