To bring home the bacon or the diploma
In high school, I was encouraged to attend college because it would get me a job that paid more money; but my Pop told me that a college education wouldn't put more food on the table -it would only make it taste sweeter. I currently have my Masters in Fine Arts, and no job. I only went to college because my dad wanted me to, and I didn't have the guts to go against his wishes. Sometimes taking advice, instead of following your heart, will lead you into favorable conditions -or not so favorable because I am still unemployed.
A former manager of mine was adamantly opposed to education because it automatically set you four years behind those that went directly into the workforce. He argued further that since less than fifty percent of college graduates use the specific degree they obtain, more than half of college graduates wasted that time and money.
How much and what kind of schools are truly beneficial to obtaining employment. Education, the liberation of the mind from singular truths, has little to do with employment -but much to do with being content. Strangely enough, the hump is hard to get over. Once you know enough to be disappointed, it's hard to know enough to persevere.
And while failure is hard to handle, so is success.

Hi Justin,
I'm considering going back to school to get my masters of fine arts in creative writing, and your post really hit home with me. I figure going back to school gives me the chance to really work on my writing skills and I get the additional bonus of having a masters degree for when I start applying for jobs after I graduate.
I don't know what you recieved your masters in, but I was just curious what you have to say about the whole to get your masters or not. I guess I'm still of the mind that further education means you'll be able to command a higher salary and be more competitive in the job market.
Thanks!
Alex
That former manager of yours was not long on vision. College for me was a long, long time ago, but i keely remember my college studies as being adventures in learning, texts for the expansion of my intellect and just possibly, but not certainly, a chance to decide on my career in life. Go to a vocational school if you don't want this! And when you have achieved that dream job several echelons above where your former manager is, invite him to lunch and regal him with what you learned in college. Goood luck.
