Words Of Wisdom For The Class Of ’07

I received an email today from a student who I have volunteered with for the past two years. Her message was simple, “Paul, I graduate in May of ’07 with my business degree. As I start my senior year what words of wisdom can you give me for my last year and as I transition into the grown-up world”?

Here is my response:

“Kristin”

I have never been asked this before. The following is my Top 10 from a list that could have been 20+.

-Keep going to class. Grades matter. As tempting as it is, do not slack off.

-Get back in touch with people you have met the previous three years. This is the foundation of forming your professional network. This included professors, speakers, previous employers, and peers.

-Start your job search now. It is easier to get into it now than be stressed about it in February or April.

-Find work that you can be passionate about. Something that will get you up in the morning and have you thinking late at night.

-Do not worry about how big that first paycheck is going to be. Yeah you need enough money to pay the bills but it always works out.

-Do not compare your paycheck to your friends. People do this all the time and egos get in the way. A very experienced PR major may make less than an inexperienced software engineer.

-Have fun. Soak in as much of the atmosphere as you can. Take a road trip or three.

-Take lots of pictures. 5, 10 and 15 years from now when you are with your friends there will be many hours of story telling. “Do you remember that time when…” Having a picture brings back more memories.

-If you can afford to, time and money, go on Spring Break. It may be the last vacation you have for a while.

-Keep track of everyone after graduation. Some will stop using their school email address so make sure you get their new one.
