Today’s Dads Are More Than Just a Paycheck
June 14, 2012 by William FriersonWork, bring home a paycheck, and discipline when necessary.
For years that was the role of fathers. Dads were breadwinners who put in long hours so they could bring home the bacon, which mothers then cooked for breakfast the next morning. Usually dads were gone before sunrise and home around dinner, just in time to follow through on mom’s threats to the kids of “WAIT UNTIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME!” Times were different then, with many dads from years ago never even changing diapers, so the notion of a full-time stay-at-home dad was completely foreign.
But the Don Drapers of the world have faded away as more women than men graduate from college, and the vast majority of those who lost jobs in the recent economic recession were men. Throw in the fact that modern day dads are actively striving for “shared parenting” and increased involvement with their kids, and you have a fundamental shift underway regarding work/life balance as it pertains to men. The Myth of Work/Life Balance: Seven Ways to Rethink Your Approach to the Daily Grind (and Get Happier in the Process!)
October 05, 2011 by William FriersonIn a perfect world, “work” and “home” would balance out neatly. We’d work from 8 to 5 each day, take an hour-long lunch, and then come home and spend uninterrupted time with our families. But for those of us here in the wake of the Great Recession, firmly entrenched in an “always on” society, this notion seems hopelessly outdated. Most of us are working longer, more stressful hours, and work is spilling over into evenings and weekends. No wonder a recent survey of North American employees found that 87 percent of respondents say their work/life balance (or lack thereof) is negatively affecting their health!
With so many people suffering from this problem, you would think the natural solution would be to encourage businesses to help their stressed-out employees find more balance in their lives. Not so, says best-selling author Jon Gordon. Continue Reading
