Veterans may want to consider using social media to enhance their job searches. The following post discusses the benefits from this source.Social media is an ever growing, ever changing, powerful tool for a job seeker. When I present a workshop on How to Use Social Media in Your Job Search to transitioning military members, every month I have to tweak my presentation to keep up with the changes to the social media sites, such as Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter.

by William Frierson
Are you looking to get the most out of your LinkedIn profile? The following post has tips to help you achieve this goal.LinkedIn is kind of a different social media platform – don’t you think? It’s a little tricky to use, and can be much, much harder to build relationships on than, say Facebook. It does have lots of great features, but it’s not as intuitive or as easy to integrate as some of the other social networks.
However, LinkedIn holds a high place of distinction, and if that’s where your target market is hanging out, you’d better be there, too! To make it worth your while, you need to make sure you have an engaging, informative, effective LinkedIn profile. Here are some easy steps to make that happen:

Are You Your Last Name?
December 03, 2012 by William Frierson
What is in a name? While you may not go as far as what one person does in the following post, remember that change can sometimes be a good thing. There is a man selling his last name. He’s ready and willing to take whatever last name YOU assign to him, for the right price. The bidding starts at buymylastname.com.
This isn’t so strange if you know the man, Jason Sadler (or whatever you or any other winning bidder chooses for him to use through 2013). He’s already had three last names, as his mother apparently married, remarried, and remarried again until this year’s divorce. There might be some other circumstances, but at least a couple of marriages and divorces seem evident.

Is your social media strategy focused on the channels that matter?
November 21, 2012 by William Frierson
With so many young people involved with social media today, it may be wise for college recruiters to use the method for attracting prospective students to their schools. The following post offers recruiters information on how they can benefit from recruiting with social media.Click on image to enlarge.
The graphic above shows the percentage of prospective students who are currently using each of the seven most popular social media sites, based on a national poll of 2,000 college-bound high school students conducted in the spring of 2012. The 2012 E-Recruiting Practices Report from Noel-Levitz compares these numbers to the social media practices that campuses report using, revealing some significant differences. Judge Strikes Down Social Media Restrictions Imposed by Many Employers
September 28, 2012 by Steven RothbergOn Tuesday, just weeks after the National Labor Relations Board issued its first decision on an employer’s social media policy in Costco Wholesale Corp., an administrative law judge joined in the Board’s efforts to scrutinize employment policies under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act, the section that protects employees’ rights to engage in concerted activities. In EchoStar Technologies, 27-CA-066726 (Sept. 25, 2012), the judge invalidated and addressed several social media and employment policies that are commonly used by employers, including: Continue Reading

I Have a Great Resume. Now What Do I Do With It?
September 10, 2012 by William FriersonJob searching needs to be a diversified effort. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket. And many people believe the only way to job search these days is to go online, post their resume to a job board, and spend time searching through the job boards looking for openings. Yes, this is a piece of the job search puzzle, folks. But it’s not the whole pie. You can’t rely on job boards alone to find a job. That makes your job search a numbers game, and you would have to spend 40 hours a week on every job board you could find applying for every position you are even remotely qualified for—literally applying for hundreds of jobs a week to get a few call-backs and maybe one or two interviews. Don’t fall into the trap of believing a job board is the only place to find employment. Below are some great ways to diversify your search and open some doors. Continue Reading

Why Social Networks Are Crucial to Getting Recruited
August 30, 2012 by William FriersonJobvite, a recruitment platform for the social Web, revealed in its 2012 Social Recruiting Survey that an increasing number of employers are using social networking as a vehicle to recruit candidates. In fact, 73% of employers said they hired a candidate through social media in 2012, compared with 63% in 2011.
This revealing survey shows just how important it is for job seekers to showcase their talents on the Internet. With nearly three-fourths of top employers seeking talent online, not promoting your skills via the Web could make it more challenging to find the job you’re looking for. Continue Reading

Why employers need to balance their needs with those of the candidates during the hiring process
August 28, 2012 by Steven Rothberg
Recruiters and hiring managers who are trying to attract the best talent to their organizations for premium entry level jobs and paid internships can be in for a tough, long process. They often need to sift through dozens of applications, then conduct a series of interviews to get to typically two or three highly qualified finalists.Hiring is never easy and can often take a very long time, but taking too long or rushing it too much can be very detrimental both to the candidate and the employer. Successful employers do a lot of things right, including these: Continue Reading

Why Facebook Battles Are Important Even When They Do Harm To Your Organization
August 14, 2012 by Steven Rothberg
The conventional wisdom is that Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites are dangerous for job seekers, recruiters, hiring managers, employees, employers and anyone else within 100 yards of a place of employment. They’re minefields and best left alone. I disagree. Yes, there are dangers and those dangers sometimes do damage to relationships but I believe that social media also provides huge potential benefits both professionally and personally and that sometimes you need to take a hit in order to make a positive impact.Todd Raphael, editor-in-chief of ERE Media, recently interviewed me via Skype about why I believe sometimes heated battles on Facebook can have a net positive impact in our professional and personal relationships and why I believe that even when those battles do some harm to our organizations such as when those battles help bring significant benefits to our communities.
