Hiring a Web Developer
July 27, 2012 by William FriersonIf you can afford to have your brand new warehouse built from the ground up, who are you going to hire to build it?
The intelligent answer is simple: a reputable building contractor with happy clients and lots of experience, right? I mean, why on earth would you invest your hard-earned dollars to hire anyone less than a pro?
What about your office building or store? As a business owner, you know that it needs to have the right look and feel to be successful. Go ahead, go shopping or to the insurance guy or the doctor. Are the stores and offices run down with bad paint jobs and worn-out carpeting? Does the store you’re buying from have empty crates and clothes blocking the aisles? Of course not. They’re all clean and neat and professional – and most are decorated to impress the customer.
So why, then, would anyone take the opposite approach with their online business? Continue Reading

Tech Companies are Hiring
by William Frierson“Do what you love” has been the advice embedded in American commencement speeches for decades. Now, however, it’s “do STEM’’ — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
“We have the brains, we have the educational capability and I’m pretty sure students want a job when they graduate high school and college. We do not have to go overseas to find our talent,” says decorated Army Ranger and entrepreneur Matthew Brosious, co-founder of FreightCenter.com. The third-party logistics company and freight software technology provider does for freight shipping what Expedia does for travel.
Brosious’ company is hiring and, for students and people interested in new careers, what it’s seeking in job candidates offers valuable insights. Continue Reading

MBA Graduates are in Demand, Even with Some Concern about Finding a Job
July 09, 2012 by William FriersonWe all hear about how tough it is to find a job these days. However, if you are an MBA graduate, some employers are looking for you.
The vast majority of MBA graduates are still receiving competitive job offers, despite their increasing concerns about employment prospects. That’s one of the key findings of a new survey conducted by Training The Street (TTS), a leading corporate training provider for a majority of Wall Street Firms and top tier Business Schools.
TTS’s third annual detailed hiring survey, which was completed by more than 300 participants from top 25 MBA programs, showed 10 percent of respondents were less optimistic about their job prospects than a year ago, even though an overwhelming 94 percent had been invited for at least one first-round interview vs. 91 percent in 2011. Seventy-eight percent of respondents had received as least one offer, and 50 percent of respondents had received multiple offers, up from 72 percent and 41 percent in 2011 respectively. Relevant Work Experience Valued by Employers Looking to Hire New College Graduates
May 03, 2012 by William FriersonCollege graduates, if you don’t believe employers pay attention to your work experience, think again. Any relevant work experience you have to offer could make a big difference in whether or not you get a job.
Employers have a hefty list of criteria against which they assess new college graduates for employment, and work experience that is relevant to the job is key among them, according to a study published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Continue Reading

Who’s Hiring in Finance Vol 2- Targeted Job Search
May 02, 2012 by William Frierson“When the truth is found to be lies” – “Somebody to Love”, performed by Jefferson Airplane (written by Darby Slick)
Very tough times at work lately. So, in order to put some hope in my day, I went off and purchased a lottery ticket. I’m not sure about you, but for me buying a lottery ticket provides some glimmer of possibly better times to come. From the moment of purchase until the lottery numbers are drawn I think about all of the ways I will spend the money and how much better (I think) my life will be. That, of course, all comes to an end when the numbers are drawn and at best I win $2 or generally nothing at all. Been there yourself? But, I am a realist and I know that the only way I might better my lot in life (or at least my job) is to be proactive in finding a better job (but one can always dream about winning the lottery). April 24, 2012 by William FriersonWhether you’re graduating from high school or you’re an adult returning to school to improve your job prospects, you want to choose a program of study that will ensure you find a job after graduation. Let’s face it: majoring in art history or philosophy might be fascinating, but the chances of those programs leading to a lucrative and stable career are slim.
There are some majors that have excellent prospects for the next few years and are projected to be in high demand. That means that choosing one of these fields is more likely to get you a great job upon graduating and who doesn’t want that? Continue Reading

Hiring Expected More Slowly in Second Quarter of 2012
March 12, 2012 by William FriersonJob seekers should expect more hiring, as we head into Spring 2012; though at a reduced rate.
Hiring in professional fields is likely to continue rising in the second quarter but at a slower pace than forecast for the first quarter, a new Robert Half survey shows. A net 2 percent of executives interviewed for the Robert Half Professional Employment Report plan to add full-time staff in the second three months of 2012, down from 10 percent last quarter. The biggest trend in the survey is the increase in the number of respondents who anticipate no change in hiring activity: 89 percent versus 78 percent last quarter. Continue Reading

More Employers Hiring Military Veterans, Yet Assistance Still Needed
February 29, 2012 by William FriersonThe transition for military veterans back into civilian life is not easy. This is also true for employers who want to hire them, but need a better understanding of what they have to offer.
A new poll from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) released this week shows that the majority of organizations—64 percent—have hired military veterans during the past 36 months, an increase over the 53 percent that reported the same in 2010.
Though more than six in 10 organizations have hired military veterans during the past three years, the number could hit 10 in 10 if only the civilian and military sectors widely understood the other’s job skills jargon. Continue Reading
