September 28, 2012 by Steven RothbergBy Mark Mehler and Gerry Crispin of CareerXroads
A few recruiters, thinking out of the box, might benefit by looking for prospects who delayed traditional education for learning of a different kind.
Peter H. Thiel, the PayPal billionaire has garnered some serious ink for his initiative in offering some of the best and brightest young minds $100k and a mentor for a two year stint at a start-up. myCNAjobs Predicts College Students May Help Alleviate the Impeding Caregiver Shortage
September 24, 2012 by Steven RothbergChicago, IL – September 25, 2012 — Caregiver turnover combined with the retirement of 8,000 Baby Boomers each day are ingredients for a major worker shortage over the next decade, according to a recent study by Service Employees International Healthcare. One factor driving high turnover, especially in states like Washington, is the inability for caregivers to secure enough working hours due to budget cuts. Another major factor is decreasing caregiver loyalty and employment satisfaction.
“Being a caregiver is a tough job and even tougher in today’s economy,” says Brandi Kurtyka, Chief Marketing Officer for myCNAjobs, a caregiving and CNA recruiting vehicle used by senior employers across the country.By 2050, over 20 percent of the U.S. population will be age 65 or older. Although professional caregiving careers are growing at a tremendous rate, nursing school enrollment isn’t growing fast enough to meet projected demand, according to the American Association of College and Nursing. 34% of Workers Have Younger Bosses
September 19, 2012 by Steven Rothberg
A new generation of professionals entering management means the correlation between seniority and leadership could be disappearing. One third (34 percent) of U.S. workers say their boss is younger than they are and 15 percent say they work for someone who is at least ten years younger, according to a new CareerBuilder survey. While most workers said it isn’t difficult to work for a younger boss, differences in work styles, communication and expectations illustrate the changing nature of office life. The national survey was conducted by Harris Interactive© between May 14 and June 4, 2012 among more than 3,800 full-time workers and more than 2,200 hiring managers across industries and functions.
“Age disparities in the office are perhaps more diverse now than they’ve ever been. It’s not uncommon to see 30-year-olds managing 50-year-olds or 65-year-olds mentoring 22-year-olds,” said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder. “While the tenants of successful management are consistent across generations, there are subtle differences in work habits and views that all workers must empathize with when working with or managing someone who’s much different in age.” Continue Reading
