LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network on the Internet, and CollegeRecruiter.com, the leading niche job board for college students searching for internships and recent graduates hunting for entry-level jobs and other career opportunities, are co-hosting a half day college recruiting conference on Monday, May 13th at LinkedIn’s corporate headquarters in Mountain View, California.
No Selling
During the keynote and presentations there will be absolutely no selling of any kind. There will be no exhibit hall or sponsors and all presenters and attendees will be corporate or government recruiting and human resource professionals. No third party recruiters. No career service office professionals. No vendors. Just your peers.

VA Offers Training Program for Veterans

Military veterans trying to get back into the workforce can apply for a VA training program, which could lead to future job opportunities. The following post has more information.According to a Department of Veterans Affairs press release, 45,000 applications have been approved for the Veteran’s Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), a new training and education program for unemployed veterans who want to upgrade their skills for high-demand jobs. Another 54,000 slots will be available in FY 2013. VRAP aims to train 99,000 veterans over the next two years in over 200 job skills that the Department of Labor has determined are the most sought-after by employers.

4 Best Practices to Promote Your Image As A Great Place To Work

Employers large and small have come to understand that their employer brand is separate from their business-to-consumer, business-to-business, or business-to-government brands. And for organizations with multiple products or services, each of those brands is separate from their employer brands as well.
Every employer wants to be known as a “great” place to work. Not every employer is. If you aren’t, don’t try to pretend you are as you’ll do more harm than good as now you’ll be known for lying in addition to whatever other negative issues may exist. So fix whatever problems you have until you truly are a great place to work and then promote that image to the students and recent graduates you most want to hire.

Top 50 Employers on LinkedIn

Last Wednesday through Friday I had the complete pleasure of attending LinkedIn’s Talent Connect 2012 conference along with 1,200 other clients and partners of LinkedIn. Although the social media career site for professionals is only four years old, they’ve quickly become a household word and a must-have tool for many corporate and third party recruiters. I attended to help our team better understand the tools and functionality offered by LinkedIn, why and how employers use LinkedIn, and to meet face-to-face with as many of our wonderful partnership points of contact as possible. By the conclusion of the third day, I could say with conviction: mission accomplished!One of the interesting tidbits of information at the conference was the release by LinkedIn of the world’s most sought-after, top employers based upon the interactions on LinkedIn by its 175 million global members, of which approximately 20 million are college and university students both within the U.S. and abroad. Are You a Mobile Enabler or a Mobile Laggard?

September marks the start of the 2012 fall frenzy of conferences, niche conferences, un-conferences, expos, seminars, webinars, (and yes, a Colloquium or two). Not every session at every event offers deep dives but the mobile discussion has been noted everywhere this year. One conference, held in mid-September, the second mRecruitingCamp, was totally devoted to the subject. (Michael Marlatt did an excellent job on this one-day niche event.)
Practitioners offering solid case study insights on mobile technology and recruiting included Matt Lavery [UPS], Chris Hoyt [PepsiCo] and Heather Tinguely [Microsoft]. Video Interview in U.K. Immediately After Keynote About U.S. Job Market for College Grads

Last week I had the good fortune to fly over to Leeds, England to keynote their annual Graduate Employment Conference. CEO of Graduates Yorkshire and Gradcore Martin Edmondson asked me to deliver a presentation about the U.S. job market for college and university students and recent graduates. Many of the issues we’re facing are similar to those they’re facing. They’re experiencing some of them before we do and we’re experiencing some before they do.One issue that I knew was important but didn’t realize just how important it would be to them was the high cost of attending just about any type of post-secondary school. The cost of attending a higher education institution is far higher in the U.S. than it is in almost any other country and FAR higher than it is to attend an equivalent school in the United Kingdom. But their recent implementation of austerity measures threatens to put their schools on a similar path to that which our schools have long been on. Without exception, every attendee and organizer with whom I spoke greatly appreciated my urging that they do not follow our lead as we are making higher education impossible for many and soon, I fear, for most. As bad as that would have been decades ago, it is even worse moving forward as we cannot and should not hope to compete against other nations to see which can manufacture goods at the lowest possible cost. Unless we want our citizenry to again have third world standards of living, we need to ensure they have first world standards of work. And that means that we need a workforce which uses the muscles between their ears more than the muscles on their backs. Continue Reading
