Top 100 Ideal Employers for 2011 College Students and Recent Graduates
by Steven RothbergEvery employer wants to be an employer of choice but most simply are not. Many quality employers are not ranked as employers of choice by college students or recent graduates because the employers don’t hire students or grads or because the employers don’t hire many. So an employer’s failure to make a “best of” list is not necessarily a criticism of the employer so much as it is a recognition that the list is essentially a popularity list and the strength of an employer’s brand goes a long way to ensuring their success in popularity contests.
“Best of” lists are important for large employers who hire dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of college and university students for internships, part-time work, seasonal jobs, and temporary jobs and recent graduates for entry-level jobs and other career opportunities. Landing on a “best of” list makes it easier for employers to recruit the best talent, which in turn makes it easier for them to remain on the “best of” list. Continue Reading

Federal Agencies Cutting Jobs — Even Military, Intelligence Aren’t Safe
by Steven RothbergNot even the nation’s ranks of spies will be safe from federal budget cuts, according to a recent article at Wired.com. Major cuts to the intelligence community’s $80 billion annual budget could result in widespread job cuts across the various spy agencies. With a mandate to cut federal spending by $2.1 trillion over the next decade, every government agency is at risk of job cutting, including the military.
Over the past two months, multiple military branches have announced personnel reductions totaling more than 67,000. Meanwhile, the United States Postal Service, which is facing financial insolvency resulting from significant declines in mail volume and retiree health benefit prefunding costs imposed by Congress, has proposed a plan that would cut its workforce by 220,000 between now and 2015 (100,000 of which would come from attrition). Beating around the bush is not allowed in resumes—or at least hiring managers would prefer it were that way. Here is why beating around the bush really just doesn’t work in resumes. Continue Reading
