Conduct a Job Search Like You Would Prepare for a Marathon
December 30, 2009 by Candice AHaving A Job Search Strategy Helps Job Seekers Compete.
Picture this: You’re training for your first marathon, the long-distance kind of event that covers 26+ miles. You are running against experienced and non-experienced runners. You also figure that you’ll be surrounded by sponsors, organizers, volunteers, cheerleaders, etc.–you will need all of these people to help make sure that all the runners are taking care of for the race.
Successful marathon-runners obviously prepare for many years. Just imagine the chaos if all the runners of the Boston Marathon just sort of showed around the time and maybe the place the race was to be held, failing to anticipate what it takes to compete and even participate with the 25,000 people including runners, organizers, and volunteers? In order to achieve the goals of being competitive or let’s say just “finishing” the race, runners apply training strategies similar to that of the successful world-class runners use. -
Headhunters Move Inside
by Candice AJob hunters who rely on head hunters or executive search firms for leads may be limiting themselves. Today, many corporations are creating in-house search departments and relying less on retained search firms, and candidates may be missing out on top positions at companies that tap talent from internal databases. Bon Secours Health System, for example, conducts 80 percent of their searches in-house.

Stop Saying You “Can Do Anything!”
by Candice ANot long ago, I had the experience of working with a new intern. While we were having a coffee, I asked her about herself and how she saw herself helping us during her stay.
“Oh, I can do anything,” she gushed. “I’m just so happy to be here that I’ll do whatever you want me to do.”
Obviously, she had a great attitude! But I was actually really disappointed with her answer – especially after I tried to prod her a little more and couldn’t get anything more specific out of her.
Why? Because telling everyone you’re a jack-of-all trades is a big personal branding mistake! -
Doctors Without Borders Entry Level Jobs Are a World Apart
by Candice AThere are a lot of people who aren’t very thrilled with healthcare in the United States. Yes, it can be atrociously expensive, but at least we have access to pretty much any medical procedure out there. Whether it’s something very basic or something that has never been tried before, the US certainly has the medical infrastructure to get the job done. There are plenty of countries in the world where even the most basic medical care is out of reach, and there are other countries where basic medical care becomes out of reach due to a crisis. That’s where New York City based Doctors Without Borders (M√©decins Sans Fronti√®res) comes in. They provide “aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters.” Doctors Without Borders does this by recruiting both medical and non-medical personnel to travel abroad to offer a level of medical assistance that is well beyond what is typically available.

Entry Level Jobs With JAKKS Pacific
by Candice APosted on December 25, 2009
Merry Christmas! I just had a wonderful morning with plenty of presents under the tree, and I hope that you did too. Despite being 25 years old, I am still a kid at heart. I’ve spent most of the morning playing with a remote control helicopter, while my dad is about to put batteries in the EyeClops Night Vision Infared Stealth Goggles that I just bought him. Yes, I got my dad a kid’s toy. I’m hoping he’ll use it for fishing, but I’m sure he’ll find plenty of other uses for night vision goggles too. After purchasing my dad’s gift, I wanted to see which company was behind it. It turns out that Malibu, CA JAKKS Pacific is behind ton of awesome stuff. You’ve got Club Penguin, the EyeClops Mini Projector, Jakks Creepy Crawlers Bugmaker, Discovery Kids toys, Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery, and all kinds of other cool things that you’d like to find under the Christmas tree.

Internships With Casey Trees
by Candice AAlthough it may seem bad that millions of trees are cut down every year for Christmas, the truth is that most of the trees are farmed and are a completely renewable resource. Most. It was not the case with the tree that some frat boys that I went to school picked out. Their foyer had extremely high ceilings, so they picked out a very tall tree from the front of someone’s yard. They cut it down, loaded it up in their truck, and sped off. Unfortunately for them, someone spotted their plates and called the police. The cops saw the tree through the fraternity house’s windows, and they nailed the culprits. Whoops. What’s the point of this story? Trees are important, and they face lots of risks. In forests trees are often left to do their own thing, but in urban environments they need a little help. That’s what Casey Trees does. They are “a Washington, DC based not-for-profit dedicated to restoring, enhancing and protecting the tree canopy of the Nation’s Capital.” Whether they’re planting trees, protecting against development, or fixing damage done by idiot frat boys, they’re doing their best to reverse the “trend of tree cover loss in the District of Columbia.” Continue reading about Casey Trees…

The Sky’s the Limit With Caribou Coffee Internships
by Candice APosted on December 24, 2009
It’s Christmas Eve–the day… err… night… that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer made a name for himself. We give Santa Claus all of the credit for delivering presents all across the world, but it’s those reindeer that are doing the hard part. Here in North America, we have reindeer just like the ones that pull Santa’s sleigh, but they’re known as caribou. Since I can’t think of any companies using reindeer in their brand name, that led me to Caribou Coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I don’t typically patronize Caribou Coffee, but I figured that a company with 6,000 employees would have to have some internship opportunities. The company is based in Minneapolis, MN, and has 500 retail locations in 16 states along with the District of Columbia. Caribou Coffee’s mission “is to provide a total experience that makes the day better,” and they’re able to do that for a lot of people by serving great coffee. Continue reading about Caribou Coffee…

What it is like to attend Emory University
by William FriersonEmory University resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and Atlanta is one of the top five fastest growing cities in the United States. The university is just a few miles from the city’s upbeat midtown and downtown hotspots, and cultural opportunities. There are also eclectic restaurants and shops, plus, music and dance clubs in the nearby suburbs. Emory’s campus covers 630 acres, with 55% of the area set aside for largely, forested land, and protected green space. In addition, EU has an organic garden, and it hopes to get 75% of the food on campus from sustainable resources within the next ten years. The school is also highly ranked in the U.S. for having many certified green buildings. Of the more than 5,000 undergraduates, about half are minorities.

Choosing the Right School Can Make Your College Career a Success
by Candice AThere are a lot of different types of colleges and universities these days – some large, some small, some online. Some schools are located in or near major metropolitan areas, while others are in suburban or rural locations. Choosing the right college or university is as important as choosing the right career field.
I have always had a preference for smaller class sizes, so attending a small, private university was right for me. But someone who likes large classes, joining Greek organizations and attending major NCAA sporting events is probably better suited for a larger college or university. But there’s more to choosing the right school than being aware of personal preferences. It’s equally important for students to know the admissions requirements of the schools they want to attend.
