How to Handle Internships on Your Resume

If I was hired by a company where I interned, do I still need to list the internship separately on my resume; and where do internships go on a resume, in the Experience section or in the Education section?

Even if you've been hired by a company, it's important to list your internship separately. The internship should be listed under the Professional Experience section of your resume, not the Education section. The Education section is strictly reserved for your formal education. When you list your internship on your resume it should look like the following:

Morgan Stanley, UK Ltd., London, UK, Summer 2008
Intern, Credit Derivative Operations Support

Being hired by the company where you interned is a testament to the hard work you put in and your ability to fit into the company culture. It is separate from the work you will be doing as a full-time employee and should be noted as such.

Good news that you've been able to secure a permanent position with the firm where you interned. This will serve as the firm entry of employment for that company.

Should you have several promotions/roles, you will begin with the most recent and list prior roles in the order in which they occurred. Your internship will always be the last mention.

Add the Internship as another title under the position you now hold, including the dates in parentheses. If you performed important duties during the internship, you can write a bullet or two.
