After the treaties were signed, Dr. John Stevenson and Jonathan Plowman Jr. established a port for indentured servants from England during the 1750s and 60s. Other problems arose for Customs officer Robert Mason was chased from the city after trying to seize the Speedwell ship with its cargo. Mason first fled to Annapolis then to Boston to stay away from the townsmen. Nothing seemed so serious to Baltimore residents until the War of 1812 when the British attacked the city. The British armies moved through the ports of Baltimore while its residents fought hard to defend their city. Historical references claim that residents threw pan, pots, buckets, and other materials after they ran out of ammunition. The battle was known as "Battle of Baltimore".

The population grew phenomenally when the commerce grew and businesses emerged in the ports. Importers and exporters generated a lot of jobs for Baltimore's residents while helping revitalize its downtown. The Great Fire of Baltimore in February of 1904 destroyed over 1,500 buildings and caused the city to reconstruct its city. By the 1950s, Baltimore became the 6th largest city in the country with a population of 949,708. The recent develops included the revitalization of the Inner Harbor, construction of the Harborplace, and The National Aquarium of Baltimore.
