Kansas City was seen by Etienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont during the first European documented visit. It was incorporated in 1850 as the territory was claimed settlement worthy due to its straddling of the border of Missouri and Kansas rivers. Settlers found the rivers helpful in developing the cities trade opportunities in the early 19th century which led to its capabilities today. The Spanish took over during the Treaty of Paris in 1763 only to handle the taxing and licensing all of the cargo through the area.
A lot of development occurred in the area, but not as much as the Civil War. Trade exchanges were halted and animosity grew between settlers; mostly slave owners and abolitionists against the acts. Military leader, General Thomas Ewing evicted four cities of residents during the Civil War. The city took into account of the changes and made a great evolution after the Civil War as the population exploded after 1869. Blacks migrated into the area taking on jobs in the trade industry increasing Kansas City's revenue and building its community.
